Unbelievable...!!!

I have just got back from seeing an out of hours GP and have been diagnosed as having a kidney infection. I don't disagree with this diagnosis, it's bloody agony!

Anyway, he prescribed me antibiotics and codiene. So I explanted that I'm on Amiodarone and that I read there were interactions with antibiotics and he said it would be fine but may interact with the warfarin a little.

I googled it when I got home and I'm bloody glad I did too:

rxlist.com/drug-interaction...

Serious interactions with both the Amiodarone and the warfarin...!!!

However did we survive pre-Google?! A gold star to you for thinking to check it out, although that should never be applicable.

Any chance you can change your doctor for one that works?

Your chemist should have picked that up surely. Always good to tell them what you're taking. I Google everything and get quite paranoid!!

I agree with jossikins, I assume the AB's are for 7 days by the time it has got into your system and hopefully sorted the kidneys your Warfarin levels will start to get back to normal. You might find a rise in the level but you can really go quite high without ill affect. I have been 3.6 while on a few other drugs short term but it went back to the level it should. Not taking all your tablets to sort the problem could make the kidneys worse which in turn will affect you in even more ways?

I have multi conditions and all of my 14 scripts have some form of reaction or interaction with each other but without them I probably would not be replying to this post. ;)

Hi. I was on amioderone for years and had occasion to use amoxylin for bronchial probs and never had a problem except with the warfarin which had to be checked.

I never take anything without checking it out first. I have had meds changed more than once over the years.

It is well known that most antibiotics can affect INR levels and it is always from my experience mentioned that an extra INR test should be taken once the antibiotics have been finished or at 7 days. Joebob I guess you are in USA not UK from your website choice. I suspect that people your side of the pond worry far more about being sued than in Europe which is why so much is published. As offcut says it is sometimes necessary to cross boundaries in order to sort things out.

No I'm in the UK.

I know people keep mentioning INR levels, and to be fair the GP did mention that they might fluctuate, but it's the interaction with the Amiodarone which is listed as being dangerous not the warfarin!

My INR reached 10 once and 8 another time I got sorted sometimes drugs do interact and I would rather clear the painful kidney infection and have INR checked.

Please ask your GP to do extra INR checks as i took Amoxycillin couple of years ago for kidney infection and it pushed mine up to 8! It wasn't immediate but over a period of 4/5 weeks. No longer take Warfarin as got fed up with all the dont's and cannots.... so am now on Pradaxa. Everyone has different reactions to diff meds but best be ahead of any probs :-)
