As you know I am having a pacemaker fitted next Wednesday and I have been having long episodes of AF over the last month. I have one now. My query is if I am having an AF episode, will the procedure go ahead or will it be postponed?

Surely you are in the same position as someone who has permanent AF?

I had my pacemaker fitted whilst in paroxysmal AF. The monitor was going all over the place during the night prior to insertion. The AF continued for about a month after insertion.
I wish you well with the Pacemaker I do not think it would be a problem as they putting in to control the AF?
Just to clear up one point. Pacemakers do not control AF, they just prevent the heart beating too slowly, unfortunately they do not stop it going too fast. I had mine put in originally because my heart rate was dropping below 30 at times and that is dangerous. It was put in so we could try other meds for the AF without any fear of my heart rate going any slower,

Hi Eileen, my heart rate drops below 30 as well, together with pauses, which is why I too am having a pacemaker fitted. I queried with my EP as to whether this would ease my AF and he said if it does not do the trick, he will do an ablation. Why he is not doing it at the same time, I do not understand. Will keep you informed!

I don't have a pacemaker but do have a slow resting pulse and have read that this sometimes lets AF electrical pulses start their tricks! This may explain why some people say gentle exercise can sometimes stop an episode of AF- the exercise raises their heart rate.It may be your doctor wants to try and see if the increased heart rate helps to over ride these impulses and so AF can't get going- or he may want to be able to try other meds for you as Eileen found they did for her.
