Does the flu vaccine affect Warfarin

I expect we will all be going for our Flu "jabs" very soon, and I wondered if the vaccine affects how Warfarin works. Last year I was on weekly/fortnightly checks so did not query this. Now, however, I am on 10 weekly checks and wanted know if I should make an earlier appointment with the Warfarin clinic.

My practise has just invited me for mine and would advise if that was needed I feel sure. Since there is no chemicals involved only dead virus I doubt it.

Interesting, I must admit when Bob said the virus was dead I wondered what was the point of that, my medical knowledge extends to Mr Jenner and his cowpox injections to prevent smallpox, but he's right I have discovered (as always :) )

So I have never had the flu jab before I don't meet the age requirements, wondering therefore if a) they will contact me b) Would I qualify under the underlying health problems or c) I just ring up my doctor and ask?

Hi Ian, ring your quack and ask for one. I'm age related now but have been having them since I was diagnosed. I think it depends a lot on doctors.

Last winter I was having the MMR jab for holiday and the nurse said I could also have the flu jab as I was now in the "at risk" category and didn't have to wait until 65.

I'm off to the surgery later this morning for mine- no appointment, just turn up.

It is suggested to have more frequent INR checks after flu vaccine. There have been a few cases of severe bleeds following the injection, but this seems to have been a rare occurrence. It is difficult to know exactly where the problem lies with interaction since the components of flu vaccine are changed every year to meet the expected changed virus, its just better to be safe than sorry and check a bit more frequently. Here in the US everyone of every age is urged to get their flu shot. Just got mine Wednesday.

G'day Enjoy,

Not for me it doesn't. Have my flu jabs and carry on ! No sweat.

Cheers

The warfarin nurse gave me the flu jab 2 days ago. No side effects so far and she didn't give any warnings. The injection site was red, sore and swollen yesterday.

PS. Here in North Wales young children are being given the flu vaccine as a nasal spray ( in both nostrils) one mother told me that after her 2 year old had been done she had been offered it - so it must be 0K for adults.
