Fasting, fast mimicking diets (FDM): what is going on?
It's hard to determine how much of the benefit is due to weight loss and how much is due to fasting.
If a person isn't overweight the fasting needs to be balanced by the known negative of weight loss. For overweight people, this is a benefit.
I asked my MO and she said that "there is something behind fasting". She went on to say that we don't know the best period and we don't know the balance between fasting benefits and the disadvantage of loss of lean mass. She thinks most of the benefits are obtained by 14 hour daily fasts. I try to eat from 11-7.
During SBRT I wouldn't eat until after the sessions (afternoon). Fasting might reduce side effects and might increase stress on cancer cells that synergizes with the radiation.
Yes, I do not fast completely (darolutamide requires some food) but I know that also Longo and his team are starting clinical trials on fasting and fast mimicking. I do like 48 hours before and 24 after chemo with around 300 kcal per day. On the other days is stick to a 16/8 or 14/10. I think the sarcopenia and cachexia problems are for people who cannot workout and do not feel hunger at all. But I am hungry after my 3 days!
Dr. Geo has an interesting podcast with Nasha Winters on the metabolic approach to cancer, including fasting. the-dr-geo-podcast.captivat...
