QOL lifestyle post … coasting midweek in Monterey, California

Kaliber profile image
120 Replies

I’m usually stuck on my couch due to my loss of mobility. My remaining time wasting away. I’ve been trying to get out and try to improve my QOL experiences while I still can. This post of my trip to Monterey this week which shows that even in the most difficult circumstances, we can get out and do things with our families and loved ones . This is one easy trip anyone can take and well worth the trouble. I did this trip in a wheeled transport chair .

Once again, thanks to Randy , Dockam, for getting this lifestyle QOL ball rolling.

First picture is stunningly delicious Cioppino from the hotel restaurant …. Still thinking about it 3 days later

yea, and we saw dolphins and seals surfing and zillions of sea birds, mostly pelicans feeding near the whales. The whales are truly huge , dolphins too … the whole Monterey bay is huge and teaming with life …. You are right, I know I don’t realize how much life is loose besides just us humans. Pretty big deal.

That looks awesome Kaliber! Something about the ocean, can never get enough of it. Especially those prawns! Love the food porn!!!

Enjoy Brother!

and porn it was brother … I’ve eaten Cioppino in about every possible restaurant , mid coast to S.F , …including Phil’s ( Bobby flay shootout ) , Captain’s Table , Alioto’s and the Mark Hopkins … “ this “ was the most delicious Cioppino ever. Omg … almost better than sex 😁😁😁

Hey Bro,

Happy that you were able to get out and enjoy some time away from the house. ANYTHING is better than my sex life!

Kaliber in reply to E2-Guy

hey bruddah…. Well if you need that AUS device, I can imagine the problems that can cause your sex life yayahahahaya. “ awkward “ …. Just say’in.

It was great to get out of my world wrapped around my depressing medical issues and experience some QOL time in the sunshine and sea air instead.

I hope you’ve gotten your doctor for the AUS procedure lined up and are getting the logistics sorted out so you can get everything taken care of there buddy.

Bro,

What R U doing up 13:40? Even if the worthless little POS didn't leak, there still wouldn't be any sex life! Not that it isn't available everywhere here, it's just the that the damn thing hasn't worked for many years post RP. Most women that know me are of the belief that I wore it out even before the RP!

Kaliber profile image
Kaliber in reply to E2-Guy

I hear you compadre , tho it’s probably little consolation , therze a lot of us guys here pulling an oar in that same boat. We know what that loss is like and we are totally sympathetic yayahahahaya.

The down side of that great coastal food is exploding my ADT induced high BG. An effort to regain control of that BG always results in a couple of days of “ extremely “ unpleasant experiences caused by juggling my metformin. No sleep for me until I get that sorted out and quieted down. Yayahahahaya. Gots to pay to play I guess. Still …. It’s well worth it …. Probably gonna sort out today , or so, and I can start carefully putting food back in my body.

Monterey pier had the Best Chiopino back in the sixties.

Kaliber profile image
Kaliber in reply to Gabby643

yea … and still does. One of the best Chioppinos I’ve been fortune enough to partake was from that restaurant that transverses the far back end of that pier. Monterey has at least 3 of the best I know about. That one, Phil’s fish market ( temporarily closed ) and the Monterey Tides Restaurant. Probably one reason is the white fish, shellfish and prawns, “ very “ fresh from the commercial market on the other pier. They grow abalone under that commercial pier as well yayahahahaya.

Makes me hungry just thinking about it.

😁😁😁😁❤️❤️❤️

Gabby643 profile image
Gabby643 in reply to Kaliber

it was at the very end of pier and arguably the best unless you're in Sicily.

Kaliber profile image
Kaliber in reply to Gabby643

And now the new chef at the Tides has an excellent Proprietoriatory saffron base recipe that utterly stuns yayahahahaya. I’m going out this morning, on my e-trike, and shop my local Asian super market for fixin’s to make another Cioppino try this weekend . to get it right , you have to incorporate a number of prep tricks. The saffron, for example ….is it 5 or 7 or quarter tbsp or ? threads. Soak them in warm water and incorporate , or grind them in a stone mortar, or grind them in a stone mortar half full of warm liquid ( clam juice or clam juice acidified with lemon ? , filtered water or ? ) and that’s just the saffron prep yayahahahaya. The shell fish - white fish prep can be just as complicated. Those restaurants , like the wharf or Phil’s ( I know Phil’s prep is very complex, I saw him on that shootout with Bobby Flay that he won ) have their house Secret recipes that allows them to charge that $48 a bowl for the cioppino yayahahahaya.

Cioppino lust is a compelling thing ..

Yikes

yayahahahaya they were hard to hear this trip …. You can see that the sea waves were rather small, but …somehow, when they crashed on shore they were thunderous. Shaking the building actually. Still those were soothing and restful and lulled you to sleep after you got used to the building vibrating. 😁😁😁😁

the trip and food was great, I seem to get stuck at home with all the medical stuff dominating my life and seriously need to get away to change things up , improve my QOL. It can be very depressing. I know my opportunities are slipping away, such a waste.

Yea this coastal paradise is pretty close, as is Kings Canyon National Park and Yosemite. All about equally close and I never seem to get out of the house to see any of them anymore.

Next week I’ve got both my major blood test panels, Lupron depot AND a Zometa infusion all stacked within three days … not going to be in condition to go anywhere for about 8 days after that. The Zometa sickness will linger as well. Going to try to load up my etrike for a trip to Eaton Trail ( a major local hike and bike trail ) and the zoo …. this week , since our 105f ( 40.6 C ) temps have now moderated finally. It’s such a relief when that happens annually.

It’s great to hear from you Kim, I hope Clint has been well and both of you are enjoying your orangery to the max. Looks like you guys are having some nice moderate weather today with a chance of that British fog yayahahahaya. Love it.

❤️❤️❤️

16starsky in reply to Kaliber

Weather has been lovely today, although a bit down as Clints latest PSA has gone up to 5.9 from 3.7 (been on Zytiga and pred for 22 months ) Just hoping its a 'blip' Clint also has Zometa, that makes his bones hurt ....

Loved the piccies you posted (40.c) its about 14 here!!!!!

❤️💜❤️💛💚

Kaliber profile image
Kaliber in reply to 16starsky

dang … Well hopefully it is just a blip but if not , but there are so many new treatments available that Clint should still be able to hang in there for a good long while. Lots of clinical trials happening too. Maybe they will soon come up with a treatment that keeps us alive , like they did with aids. Doesn’t have to be a cure, but a remission “ stay alive drug “ would do, considering.

Crossing my fingers for Clint , I’ll be sending out the good thought vibes ( transfer of merit ) for him too.

❤️❤️❤️

in reply to 16starsky

sorry about that bone pain . 😩

Thanks Scott, to be honest I;m more worried about the rise in his PSA !!!!!

Havn;t heard from you in a while, are you ok ?

Hi Kaliber,

Reading your post has been a light bulb moment for me and you have made me decide that my life needs to change. I am 3.5 years into this 'journey' and, sometimes, it seems to me the only time I leave my house is for blood tests, scans and infusions. Its, not quite that bad. There are occasional visits to family and the odd bit of light shopping, but no holidays, days out, cinema, restaurants or just driving around for the joy of it.

I suppose a lot of it is down to Covid when I was bombarded with letters telling me I was high risk and should stay indoors as much as possible. I would go out for walks of up to 5 miles in the early morning when very few people were about. After a time, these walks got fewer and fewer and now, they are merely every now and again. My mobility isn't brilliant due to neuropathy in my feet, and I need to use a stick over any distance, but, if you can get out in a chair, why can't I get off my fat backside and get out there and do something?

At the age of 76, I am wasting my remaining years. It's not that I am sitting here waiting to die, because I'm not. I'm just sitting here idling in neutral, when I need to rev up and get the hell out of the house.

So, Kaliber, if you can do it, so can I. Thank you for reminding me I am not dead yet.

Take care and big respect.

Kaliber profile image
Kaliber in reply to Dastardly

yea exactly … we are almost twins in many respects yayahahahaya. I’m 76 as well , have basically the same issues, 3 3/4 years here . Randy’s exploits got me up and out doing things, I’m glad if I’ve encouraged you to get out as well. We both know our time is running out … neither of us should sit around just waiting for that other shoe to drop when we are still able to get out and have some “ enjoyable “ life style, spend some quality time with loved ones outdoors and take our minds off the mess our lives have become, even if for only a little while.

Love and respect backatcha brother , get out and post your exploits…. maybe , thanks to Randy … we can get a QOL movement going and get ALL us croakers here out , off our couches, and have some fresh air and fun Yayahahahaya

Big day out tomorrow K. I'm off for my 3rd infusion of Zometa. It only takes about 20 minutes, but you end up paying for it for a week or so. Maybe I'll get the nurse to take my photo.

Keep on keeping on.

Kaliber profile image
Kaliber in reply to Dastardly

I’m off next Tuesday for my 48th Zometa infusion , usually takes me an hour in the clinic. Like you, I’ll be out “ painfully “ for about 8 days. A cherry on top is my Lupron implant the same day. That initially takes me out for three days but they will overlap with the Zometa. Gonna be some fun in the ole town now ‘eh yayahahahaya. This is exactly what the QOL trips is intended to take our minds off of .

ryte owen … brother Randy yayahahahaya… this is my 3rd trip inspired by your lifestyle posts . Its great and I have more irons in the fire as well. Looking to hit the local section of a regional hike and bike trail ( Eaton Trail, on my powerful etrike ) and the zoo this week , if possible.

The cioppino in the picture is the exotic saffron base Cioppino and you can see the accoutrements in the bowls 😁😁😁. If you are near Monterey , it’s WELL worth going out of your way to stop in for a bowl.

Maybe , thanks to you, we can put a spark in more of us croakers here , and like me, get them up and off their miserable couches too. Maybe start a sweeping QOL life style improvement change among the bunch of us …. How great would that be …

Hey Brother, looks like you have Inspired Dastardly who posted above: "So, Kaliber, if you can do it, so can I. Thank you for reminding me I am not dead yet"

So, my "ripples" as I call them have already spread from me outward.

This is from a Blog post in 2017:

"Athlinks: Do you have a personal mantra?

Kam: Go big or go dead? Just kidding! I’ve always said that we are in a great big pond and I want to make ripples that extend out and affect people that I may never meet.

blog.athlinks.com/2017/05/1...

In 2016, at about my 25 a Chicago reporter who knew my story, did a walking interview with me and here is a quote from that : " “I want to become an advocate,” he said. “I’m not the type to just sit and wallow; I’m going to seize the day and make as much of a positive out of this as I can.”

I wore back bibs during marathons post diagnosis in 2015, the sign exhorted men to get checked or had the names of men taken by d*mn PCa. I had innumerable other runners come up to me on the courses and just give a thumbs up, or Thank me, or even stop and tell me their PCa stories

runnersworld.com/news/a2082...

In 2015, I spoke with a reporter about my doing the Orange County marathon, 3 days post chemo. Had a photographer meeting me at a park for candid pix.

My ex said to me:

"You've been flying under the radar for so many years, why do you wanna put yourself out there like that" I replied that "I think that I could help"

Yes, it would be so wonderful for us PCa men to post QoL trip pix💙

Just do it Brothers!!

you are definitely the stone in the middle of this round of ripples.

You certainly prodded me to get off my couch and stop thinking about my life revolving around feeling like $hit and trips to Kaiser.

Hopefully more men here that are sitting around in their chairs or couches .. bummed out … get up, grab a loved one/s and get some fresh ( sea !! ) air and sunshine. Like you, grab some great resort food and brighten up their miserable lives. post their adventures here to inspire others. It’s true, if I can get out there , then most all of the other men here can as well. No excuses, just do it yayahahahaya yayahahahaya. I hated it when I had to get up and get started but loved it when I got going . I’m not dead yet, I’m gonna try to take advantage of that .

Love ya brother ❤️❤️❤️

yikes … I’ve kayaked a lot in coastal estuaries ( Moro Bay ) , nothing gets your adrenaline pumping more than a grouchy 1500 pound elephant seal scraping the bottom of your kayak passing underneath in shallows … big as a freight car and not very friendly yayahahahaya. It’s the reason my wife quit coastal kayaking with me, scared the beejeebers out of her. Wouldn’t go back. I loved it tho … adrenaline junkie probably.

I’m not sure if I can say this here …. It might get bounced and if so I’ll PM you. This mention is suggesting a more reasonable coastal choice ,price wise, for us guys here , I’m not affiliated in any way. If you are coasting, it’s beneficial to know these hidden gems.

thanks …. Google: Monterey Tides Resort, Those buildings off in the distance in my top photo are Monterey and the Monterey Bay Aquarium.

The seafood in that bowl is fresh off the commercial fisherman’s pier store on the commercial fishing wharf.

Hint: Always ask for a room on the “ ocean “ side ( half their rooms face away from the ocean but are much quieter ) . There are numerous other similar resorts on the water you can choose there , but this one is affordable and high quality for guys / gals like us.

It is amazing how beautiful the world becomes when you feel as though you are losing it. Once you see beyond the "taken forgranted," life becomes richer, and the simplicity of just existing tells me that death itself is an evolution into a higher awareness, another door opening to replace depression with a new and improved sort of belief that goes beyond blind faith.

Steinbeck had this to say as he considered the once plentiful sandine canneries that marred (or perhaps enlightened)the grandeur of Monterey Bay:

It has always seemed strange to me...The things we admire in men, kindness and generosity, openness, honesty, understanding and feeling, are the concomitants of failure in our system. And those traits we detest, sharpness, greed, acquisitiveness, meanness, egotism and self-interest, are the traits of success. And while men admire the quality of the first they love the produce of the second.

It seem as if your vision and the sentiment of a great number of responsers to your post share a common insight into words written three quarters of a century ago.

Kaliber profile image
Kaliber in reply to Jvaughan0

I have a few extra tools at my disposal , acquired from my 32 years in formal Soto Zen priest training. Still I’m just a plain Jane everyday guy but with a death sentence . Just like just about everyone else on this group. For me and for everyone else in this boat, we all share the same eventuality… we see our world pretty clearly and distinctly, our reality is in our faces 24 -7. that’s unavoidable …. We see it in the faces of our loved ones as well. That “ taken for granted “ element of normal daily life / human nature doesn’t exist for any of us , or them, anymore.

Speaking for myself, it’s a cold, sober new reality …and not a pretty or nice one. Feeling sick all the time, tests and tests and medications and medications , SEs and SEs , bad news and more bad news … seeing that family sadness …. It’s pretty easy to see how men like us could become depressed, be crushed …lose interest in life … end up stuck on our comfortable couch , Zoloft‘ed or opiated into oblivion. Yea there’s that and I think I’m tuned into” that “ about as much as anyone here ….

Still …..yayahahahaya …… I’m- we’re not dead yet, ….not yet. Most all of us are “ still “ able to get off our couches - duff and try to enrich our lives , shake off some of that crappy doom and gloom and go out and enrich our realities and our loved ones’ realities with us. That smile on their faces is priceless. Unless we are finally lying there , immobile, in our hospice beds ….we still have this little bit of opportunity to get a bit more Quality of Life Experience if we will drag ourselves up and go do it.

Like you are saying above, it’s never been more important in life and the benefits really are richer and never more appreciated. I recently went to Kings Canyon National Park and sat in my wheeled transport chair next to a giant redwood tree ….. I felt pieces of fallen bark .. the resonance of sound in the presence of those beautiful gigantic trees … the joyous laughter of little children experiencing that place for the first time … calls of crows and woodpeckers… The cool and pine flavored mountain air …. I’ve probably been there 100s of times ( it’s only 50 minutes from here ) but I’ve never experienced it like that before.

Like you said … “ it’s amazing how beautiful the world becomes when you felt as though you are losing it “ is exactly right … that life does become richer than the life of lying on the depressing couch … much richer is really true. Just the coastal road trip itself , let alone the great ocean destination experience…definitely enriches our lives. Totally takes our minds off the doom and gloom. All us croakers need some d&g relief , and thanks to being prodded by the Doc, Im finally getting some much needed life elevation of my own …. Like Randy, I’m sharing my own experiences with the thought that other guys here will be encouraged to get up , go out and enrich their lives as well. We desperately need it, our families need it just as much … it’s a total win win situation. As I’ve said in this thread previously, just a charcuterie pic-nic in a local park, maybe a drive in the country , stop for some ice cream , or roadside veggies / fruit … or better yet, easy trips like Randy and myself are posting . I think sharing this is a good thing if it encourages others too ( and seems like it has, so far ) … that’s about it I guess yayahahahaya. ( boy this was long winded , huh ? Yikes )

Hey brother Kal. What you doing causing a big thread? Just kidding of course lol.

Yea dont know where to jump in here. I was thinking about you yesterday having skimmed thru the thread your vast life experiences the Soto Zen being one of them.

You have a way with your communication that is much appreciated.

You touched on something just now I was going to add from my experience this past summer and a few times a week to this day. As fortunate as you are to have the coast and the mountains so accessible for me just in my own neighborhood especially since moving to twin cities has fulfilled a lot of the get out of the house QOL living. I shared some of the lake pictures, the rainbow, panfish, et. But even going for curbside pickup is a treat. I don't mind if the local target didnt have it and I have to drive farther. I take the back scenic roads, spark a bowl before I leave, put in a music cd of my choice. Seriously its living the good life even though it sounds pretty simple.

Kaliber profile image
Kaliber in reply to CAMPSOUPS

yayahahahaya I love the spark a bowl part especially , good one. ( safe driving of course 😂😂😂 ) . Inland here we have trout and bass mostly, the rangers bring them in a truck and they are all fished out in about 2 hours. Way too many fishermen and not enough fish.

Hey … I hear you guys have some great winter time fun up there …. Snowmobiling, skiing, snowshoes, ice fishing and a lot more. I even have , affordable, military Mickey Mouse boots ( with the valve on them ) , military surplus snowshoes/ poles , military double mittens and those extreme cold weather military parkas with the fur around the hood. Very toasty warm , even in 4’ of snow. Back in the day, the hammer and I would get decked out and take our 4X4 heavy hauler Silverado up to the parking lot at Kings Canyon … 3’ deep snow, snowshoe trailhead there. Full of snowshoers , jam packed, and Ranger guided trails … we’d drop the tailgate …get out our snowshoes and lean them against the tailgate . We’d wave at everyone, chat people up, open up our thermous of hot chocolate and watch the action. Probably lay down in the snow, throw snowballs, etc. …. Then we’d put the unused snowshoes ( what, all that backbreaking snowshoeing) back in the truck and drive back down the mountain. We’d get home …put the stuff away quickly and jump into our jacuzzi in our banana palm forest ( minus 10f in the park , 68f here at home ) yayahahahaya yayahahahaya. Just say’in 😂😂😂😂

Fantastic. I had a bit of that when I lived in Japan. Summertime days of 97F w/ 99.8% humidity. 45 minute drive to mountains with 45F temperature picnicking next to a cool, clear mountain stream.

Or 45 minutes the other way and arrive at the ocean beach road .

I was a kid for quite a few years in Seattle and was stripped lol from that great ocean smell we all love and the pines and all that when we moved to the midwest. When I ended up in Japan at 18 years old I felt like I was in heaven lol.

that look pretty good… I’ve bought the “ fix’ins at Trader Joe’s, Save Mart ( for the sauce ), and off Amazon … plus others …..and I’ve tried a few times myself (/and still try ) as well. I’ve discovered that making “ great “ Cioppino is WAY more difficult than it looks. Yayahahahaya requires serious chops. So far I’ve decided I don’t like Cioppino with the crab legs in it much….. messy, only looks good and little benefit food wise and I like the saffron base best. Everyone’s taste is different, however yayahahahaya. Most of my home made bases are better than (/say ) Amazon’s but Trader Joe’s is pretty good if you Jack it up with fresh prawns and fresh live clams ( frozen clams ok sorta ). Seems like there are many base soup variations, nationally acclaimed Phil’s Fish Market ( Moss Landing ) used a version of lobster boil base. Cioppino Is a science all by itself. 😁😁😁😁

yayahahahaya yayahahahaya …. Me too … I just got back ( just 1mile on my etrike ) from a large local Asian Super Market …. shopping for seafood, to make another try at making saffron Cioppino this weekend. Their layout of dim-sum , fresh fish, shellfish and different noodles is mind altering. Huge selections of everything . A dizzying array of fresh fish, most of which I’ve never seen or heard of before yayahahahaya ( we are only 110 miles from one of the largest fisheries on the west coast, loads of fresh seafood around here ).

I’m having Japanese panko breaded oysters and fresh , chilled, jumbo shrimp for lunch in a few minutes yayahahahaya. All this seafood and Cioppino talk is making me hungry as well. Reach thru my iPad screen ( pastor rod flash, Firesign Theater) and I’ll give you some too.

Hey Brother, I cheated and got Cioppino sauce and Saffron from Amazon. Pulverized the Saffron and let it sit in a couple tablespoons of boiling water, then added to the sauce.

Used frozen clams, mussels, and jumbo shrimp. Added a piece of salmon to the bread bowl.

Mahalo for the inspiration

10-4, the hammer loves those sourdough bread bowls. We didn’t add that additional element this time , but after we are comfortable with the process of scratch base, I believe she’d prolly love to add the bread bowl too. We did have sourdough toast tho.

that really looks good .. goes to show you that great minds think alike yayahahahaya. We also made made our cioppino yesterday , finished it off this evening for dinner. Made two meals. I had to get “ next day “ delivery from Amazon for the 1 cup of concentrated clam juice, couldn’t find it in a store locally. We did our saffron exactly the same way you did, ground about 1/4 teaspoon saffron threads in a stainless mortar , then added it to a small amount of boiling water. I sliced up the tapia fish cross section , off the central bone , into chunks and helped slice - dice the fresh fennel bulb. We also sprinkled in a little of the green fennel tops. We used both canned and a couple small fresh tomatoes. The hammer did the rest, not sure what she put in it, a bunch of stuff.

The hammer did most of the cooking. The picture below is the muscles, clams, large shrimp , fish pieces and frozen scallops. You don’t get a proper sense of scale in the picture but that bowl is huge. We also bought some things frozen , and the Asian food store seafood counter prepped the muscles and shrimp for us .

The hammer did all the cooking and it came out amazingly delicious this time. Wonderful yayahahahaya. Not quite as good as the Tides buy WAY better than about 98% of anything we have bought in most restaurant's. This was a kinda test run to see if we could pull it off and it worked straight out. We lightly toasted slices of sourdough , rubbed with juicy fresh garlic and drizzled Herdade Exporao DOP Moura olive oil on it.

Sadly I got so involved / excited I forgot to take pictures of the finished product , but it looked like you’d expect with a lot of sauce.

I thought ,initially, that we over did the amount of seafood and the sauce wouldn’t cover it all, but instead it was perfect. Seems like more is better 😁😁😁😁.

How kewl eh …. Both of us with the cioppino hunger …. and got our fix at the same time .. yayahahahaya. That’s pretty trippy ….

Very large bowl of both fresh and frozen seafood.

Mahalo Bruddah 💙

That looks like a lot of seafood, but it's for two and it's not fatty and it's healthy for you too.

And you got me craving Cioppino with your QoL post.

I'm riding on your Ripples Bruddah!

The items I got from Amazon are in the pic. I only used 1/2 of that jar along with the juice from the clams, mussels, and salmon. Walmart up here had seafood broth in stock, but not this time 😔

My taste buds are shot from all the chemos, but I still really loved the Saffron infusion into that sauce

Now, gotta attempt Paella with the special r ice

Gotta get a paella pan too😂

omg you’re freaking me out buddy. That tin of saffron is the same exact brand I buy on Amazon , I get the 10 gram tin …… I eat the 17 strands every morning that is part of my cancer supplement regimen ( along with the capsule of saffron , as recommended on the group , to go with it ). We both are making cioppino … AND … I’m NOT kidding , I also wanted to try paella next , also suggested by the saffron. Feels like you are running a microphone in my brain yayahahaha yayahahaha. My mind is blown.

The cioppino dish I’m trying to replicate is like those made by Bobby Flay and Phil from Phil’s Seafood Market ( was on moss landing , now moving to Castroville ). Also served at the Captains Table , Fishermen’s Wharf.. Monterey. Those dishes feature the seafood as the main player… Phil’s , for example , is a giant mount of shellfish ( up to 7 kinds ) and copus crab legs sticking out of the bowl they serve. It’s heaping … I don’t like the messy crab legs so I omit those. That large bowl of seafood in my picture made 4 bowls of cioppino that looked modestly populated with seafood when finished . We make our cioppino base fresh , entirely from scratch.

Keep me posted about your paella exploits when you make it . Including the kind of rice you decide to use ( of the 37 kinds in my local Asian market).

❤️❤️❤️

WOW, that's so trippy that we got the same Saffron :-).

I used frozen seafood from Albertsons and Walmart, as the closest Asian market is about 2 hrs away from here.

Awesome that you made it from scratch, I took the easy way out. I found these:

roger on the recipe’s bruddah. I’m not sure where the hammer got hers but its the one with the large minced white fennel bulb , saffron and Sauvignon Blanc wine in it. I thought the fennel was garlic at first, the way she prepared it. We are REAL lucky to have so many Asian markets here in Fresno, real big Asian populations ( over 107,000 ) here need the scratch goods to cook with. One particularly nice / big one ( R-N Market ) is easily reachable by me on my etrike. Just, I can’t open the freezer doors on my trike yayahahahaya ( trike blocks doors ). The guy behind the fresh seafood counter waves and knows me I’ve been in there so many times. My motor scooter-ish etrike puts some people off, but R-N gets it, they even have a bland loaner at the main entrance for guys like me. I have to meet the hammer there to help me.

We are going to make one more cioppino run ( cioppino lust yayahahahaya) and then it’ll be paella next. Bibian has learned to be master of Umami with bonito base miso ( took a while and many tries and difficulty of finding authentic/ proper fixin’s ) … now add cioppino .. to her repertoire . hopefully paella next, tho I’ve heard its a difficult dish to master properly and has a short plated life before it goes bland / flat or something.

Seems like, to me, you are knocking it out of the park making dishes there buddy … learning to adapt with limited local resources. Heck yes …. Thank goodness for Amazon huh …… ( yayahahahaya) When cancer - adt takes away main parts of our lives ( our junk and sex life ) , travel and especially food can become ever so much more important in the realm of QOL . … and it’s a family thing too.

Ok buddy, keep me posted , especially the pitfalls of paella preparation. Should be “ very interesting “ ( Arte Johnson, Laugh-in, Rowan and Martin ).

❤️❤️❤️

Oh wow, didn't know that there were that many Asians in Fresno area. I love their markets with a ton of different fruits/veggies, and seafood. Years ago my daughter-in-law, back then just son's girlfriend was in OC to visit. She went to Culinary School in Louisiana and cooks legit Cajun/Creole cuisine. After Dim Sum at a Chinese Restaurant, I took her to 99 Ranch and she was amazed at all of the seafood that was in there :-)

I have a 1/2 jar of the Cioppino sauce and the spaghetti, just pulled more seafood outta the freezer for dinner.

I went onto Amazon and got Bomba rice, Spanish sweet Paprika, Piquillo peppers, Spanish olive oil, and a 10 inch polished steel Paella pan. Will head down to the 99 Ranch in Van Nuys for fresh seafood this weekend.

I love to cook, took over Thanksgiving after Mom in Law passed in 1988 and have tried to cook a lot of varying cuisines. And YES, food has to take the place of Carnal pleasures with me also, along with trips outta town.

I will post my QoL food porn and travel pix. I gotta get the rice a lil burnt and crispy on the bottom the Socarrat . In Chinese it's called fan jiu
