Knew husband had spot on9th rib latest scans/ct show more in spine! Will Chemo slow these down?

He is to have 6 treatments with Taxotere possibly more. Finished 3rd even with lowering dose past 3 days wiped out again! Would like to know if this will slow down the cancer? Will he have quality of life for a time after or is it continued treatments till they just don’t work anymore! His PSA is coming down last lab 411.

I did chemo 5 years ago, it cleared up my lungs and left hip. It is back in those spots again I am going to do Docetaxel again shortly. I got wipe out by chemo the 1st time but with some exercise was close to my old self again. I had radiation to my hip and prostate bed in Dec 2020. I did Zytiga for 2.5 yrs stopped in August 2021 after it was failing. Tried Xtandi for 5 days, but had severe reactions, even after cutting back to 50 %. I hope this helps you.

Did you discuss Keytruda with your doctor for treating your lungs if they're still an issue? I was treated with Keytruda for my lung melanoma and it worked...

Yorkie. The chemo stopped my cancer for 5 years so far, they did find a new hot spot last set of scans. Another scan scheduled for next month so will find out what’s going on. By the way Doctor has me on Xtandi as well. Good luck warrior 🙏🙏🙏

Yes hoping meds will help some but we have to watch her when on floor she bumps into everything and gets stuck. She had lost her sight because PRA and got around well but that has changed.Both our dogs love Daddy and help us laugh daily!

Did you use Xtandi before or just after the chemo? Husband only on lupron & exgeva now. Has done Xofigo & Radium 223 which saw his PSA rise Oncolgist very surprised by that.

Started chemo immediately after first scans. Then started Xtandi when chem was done, I’m on eligard and Xgeva shots every 28 days.

Hi, Yorkie. I'm a PCa wife as well. Chemo is definitely a slog for our fellas. You can read my profile for my husband and go back into some of my postings about the chemo experience. It's all over the place. My husband had six full doses of Docetaxel and four at 75% strength. Responses to chemo, from my readings on Health Unlocked, are quite variable. Some men get a lot of mileage out of it--a few years--and some start failing during chemo. Here are some responses I got to a chemo question I asked:

Men who are diagnosed at stage 4 often get chemo as their first treatment. My husband's primary treatment seven years ago was ADT + radiation. Chemo came four years later when he developed mets.

Right now my husband is stable a year and a half after the last chemo infusion. He had ten infusions over seven months, but his PSA wasn't as high as your husband's to begin with. (He's a high Gleason, low PSA, not a good thing either). I wish you and your husband a good response to the chemo he's getting.

Thank you.When my husband was diagnosed 12/2016 PSA over 1000 never has been below 40. He resisted Chemo as he was working and didn’t want his quality of life to change. As PSA climbed so high after Radium he had no choice! He just had 3rd chemo treatment and the reduced it 25% as he was suffering from it! I will look up your profile Prayers to you both.

If/when Taxotere (Docetaxel) is becoming ineffective, there is also second-line Jevtana (Cabazitaxel). Many have reported the side effects to be more tolerable and still can be an effective chemotherapy. Something to discusss with the doctor.

Thank you for that info. At the last visit Oncolgist mentioned possibility of more than 6 treatments. The Docetaxel is tough on him could they possibly switch to Jevtana then? Quality of life is a mess at moment.

Jevtana is approved when Docetaxel is considered to be ineffective. He might be able to get it approved for side effects, but you'd have to ask. Not sure how that would work, but if he's already had 6 cycles of Docetaxel, I think the chances are better than if he hadn't done any Docetaxel.

Thanks again. We find ourselves in uncharted waters as far as research I guess we hoped the Radium 223 would have done something but didn’t. Hence chemo after last scans/ct.
