Delay in surface wound healing

Hello,

Wondering if being on Zytiga (5 MG prednisone), 3 mo lupron injections, would cause delay in healing of wounds, scrapes, bug bites?

Have been on lupron for about 2 years

Thx,

Peace

Good question I have wondered this as well but based on my experience I am unsure.

Are you keeping close attention to your blood sugar ? My adt has caused me a whopping case of “ drug induced diabetes “ ( doctor’s definition ) I battle it daily . If your blood sugar gets out of whack enough , it will make healing wounds very slow to heal. Dunno if that’s it, but it’s one possibility.

Just say’in 💪💪💪❤️❤️❤️

Thanks haven't had a A1C test but isn't glucose level a indicator? I probably misspoke my cuts, scrspes and sores heal fine. What I may be noticing is the scars seem to linger longer. No hard data on that though.

I have flushes of skin cancer mets that spring up on my right forearm frequently. 14 of them , so far. I kill them with liquid nitrogen but I burn them down to muscle and get scars every time. I use that ointment called “ scar “ that I massage int the wound a couple times a day. Nearly all the scars are gone now except a couple that will probably check out with me. Dunno if that helps … just my experience.

I always appreciate others experience. I only have a couple that I had in mind in responding earlier, but glad to have options if the linger a bit longer.

What exactly is a "skin cancer met"?

Kaliber profile image
Kaliber in reply to GoBucks

In 5000 cases of prostrate cancer , about 500 ( 10% ) develop melanomas as well. Lucky me … got melanomas popping up like popcorn yayahahahaya. Just one more “ joyous “ gift of having prostrate cancer. Got them on my forehead too.

“ Skin cancer met “ is my nickname for these melanoma swarms caused by my PCa.

“ A possible association between between Melanoma and Prostrate Cancer. Results from a case-control-study “ .

Your link won’t work. I’d love to see the study. 10% of prostate cancer patients develop melanoma? That’s hard to believe. Why aren’t more MOs discussing it with their patients? Or are they?

Just type the first sentence into Google: a possible link between melanoma and prostate cancer. Dozens of articles come up linking the two, including the nih article.

My Medical Oncologist referred me to a dermatologist to get checked for Skin Cancer. She want me to 1) get checked over 2) get checked regularly

Yea it seems to happen to just a small amount of PCa patients…. in 70 years never had one, suddenly popping up a lot. Easy to get rid of , even at home, if you catch them early. Always check with your dermatologist and get biopsies.

Thank you Kaliber, need to look into blood sugar levels. I do avoid all sugars, I do eat fruit.

There is no downside to knowing your A1C … 👍👍👍

I haven't noticed a change.

My skin aged about 50 years over the last 12 months as I battle my cancer. Skin is always dry, rips / cuts easily, bruises like I have never seen, and when I get an actual cut, takes several weeks for the scab to heal / fall off…

June was my 1 year anniversary for TrelStar, and September will be my 1 year anniversary for Zytiga/Prednisone.

Yes, me too, thx

I'm having the same problem on Zytiga plus Dexamethasone. I know steroids do cause the skin to get thinner. Mine seems to scrape off just rubbing something hard. And then the healing is slow.

Going to discuss this with my doctor on Wednesday, but I do believe it's the steroid.

Gregg57's "Mine seems to scrape off just rubbing something hard. And then the healing is slow." describes my situation exactly.

Same problem with my husband. Several doctors have said it’s the steroids. Palliative care dr asked his skin specialist and they really had no help either.

in reply to Cynthgob

I'm pretty sure it is the steroid. I read somewhere that how long you use it is a big factor even if the dose is low. I've been on it now for 3 years continuously.

gregg57, Have you ever heard of anything that can even slightly mitigate this problem other than eliminating or decreasing steroids? I've been on Zytiga + prednisone about 2.5 years, and my thin and tender skin problems (especially on my forearms) have definitely increased over that time. Example: Was visiting friends recently. Brushed against their refrigerator. Moments later they pointed out that I was dripping blood on their carpet.

in reply to Gearhead

That describes me. It's mainly the forearms. I scraped my forearm on a shopping cart last week and it just took the skin right off in a 1 x 1/2 inch area and left me bleeding badly. It's scabbed up now, but will probably take several weeks to heal completely. I don't know what if anything can be done, but I'll ask my doctor. So far, I am having really great results with Zytiga plus Dexamethasone so do not want to change anything. I'll live with this if necessary.

Green, how old are you? Are you on blood thinners? I know nothing about Zytita. I have a better than layman’s understanding of Lupron, Prednisone, and aging.

Was metastatic in 2004. I am 74.

Not sure about drug but you can check drugs.com for possible harms. Also note, wound healing has been studied with HONEY (use organic only), sugar (again organic) or Aloe vera. I personally closed a gaping surgical wound, open for 8 days, with gel from the Aloe plant in my yard.

Keith was diagnosed in 2016, age 56, Lupron for 4.5 years with Zytiga and prednisone for 4 years. He did 6 rounds of taxotere and Provenge.

His glucose stays under 100 in the 90 range and he mainly eats low carbish.

He has been the to dermatologist several times for skin eruptions that bleed, heal, bleed, heal, repeat and rinse. Dermatologist dismissed them and GP finally started using liquid nitrogen to take care of them.

Bug bites have been awful - he's been to the GP twice in the last three months; once for a spider bite and once for a wasp bite. The wasp bite was on his stomach and the redness and swelling was about as big as a soccer ball. He ended up getting a prednisone shot for that. This is a man that shrugs off wasp stings like nothing.

His skin has become extremely sensitive and even leaning on the desk can cause long lasting red marks on his forearms. He now has a latex allergy as well.

He also had a short lived but intense reaction to the contrast on his last CT/PET. They're talking about adding Benadryl for next year's scans.

Yes I am having difficulty with healing of chest wounds that started in April 2021, 15 months after starting abiraterone.

I am only on eligard / Lupron. Or was on it for three years. Last shot was last November. I have had small puddles of blood under thin skin for a couple years. Sometimes they bleed spontaneously. At other times it's when I brush against something. As usual none of the docs I see knew anything about it. My wife bought some forearm sleeves to use when I go out with short sleeve shirts so I don't freak anyone out and to protect them. Mike.
