He’s gone

After what seemed like rapidly declining medical status in the last month, I lost my beautiful husband this morning. We’d made the decision to move to inpatient hospice yesterday as he continued to decline. At last count his PSA was 2800 and Alk Phos was 916 both numbers up considerably from just a month ago. Other labs too low to make him a candidate for continued treatment. We were in hospice a little over 12 hours. There’s a sense of peace that comes from the end knowing we did everything possible to prolong it. He was a doctor, so he knew at diagnosis he would likely not see 5 years. But he allowed me to be optimistic. He was a husband, a father to 3, a Marine, a doctor, and my best friend, we just celebrated our 28th anniversary on Saturday. He was 53.

Thank you for this site, and all of you who share your stories, your questions and responses. It’s been a tremendous help to me over these last several years. Best of luck to all of you still fighting.

I awoke to this misserable disease this morning.Your great warrior husband didnt...

The paradoxes of life

Joy in sadness

The memory of love in salty teardrops

The loss of a man that heals

By a disease that cant be...

In time may you find a reason to smile

In the painful memories

Of life spent together

Peace to you and yours

Thanks for the update. Sorry for your loss. Reread all your posts. It's been a hard row to hoe. We all dread the day of our passing more for our wives than for ourselves, but as hard as we try to hold it together, we will all be there way too soon. Love you and all wives who stand by us on this horrible trip we are on.

Oh my Lord in Heaven. Another young Family. It is lovely you find Peace in this time of sorrow for that is what this has become. No more pain and suffering and filling our bodies with pharmaceuticals. You must know your husbands spirit will be with you and your children now, and will remind you often with little signs. A feather, a butterfly, a shiny coin in front of you, one of the children using one of his common expressions. Peace be with you and yours,

Mike & Barbara

Prostate cancer is usually considered an "old man disease". Its easy to forget it takes those of us only in our 40s and 50s as well. So sorry for your loss

I’m so sorry for your loss. I hope your husband’s transition may being some peace for you and your family. At 51, I too understand the difficulty of dealing with this when so relatively young and for you, your husband and your family. My heart breaks for you. Stay strong!!!

I'm so sorry, WVtwinsmama, that you've lost your husband so soon after his diagnosis. I see that you both had two years of hell as you tried to vanquish a shockingly fast form of prostate cancer. You must feel numbed by the speed and pain of your husband's decline. I wish you peace in the sad days ahead. You did so much for him.

A true soldier who served so many others, and the same in life as a doctor! It is a sad passing and I wish to offer my condolences and heartfelt remorse for your loss.

I'm left with an image in my mind...

One of which how all of us PCa patients are standing in line, shoulder to shoulder, like the soldiers and warriors, ready to change, to fight, not even just for ourselves but for those to the left, and to the right, but especially for those behind us.

And as I'm standing there, I see and can feel the loss and emptiness as warriors fall around me. It's hard to explain, hard to put a finger on it, but the pain is real, knowing we are fighting an unimaginable for, one who we don't understand the depth of its resources, or when the fight may end. Only that it fights us as we stand together, and continue to fight, through the darkness as we hope for victory! It fights incessantly, taking everything we throw at it, every charge we make to breech it's defenses. And still we fall... But we fight, we fight to live another day and stand together, side by side, until there is fight no more!

Best Regards and again, condolences to you and all his loved one's.
