How many of you are taking melatonin and how many of you are taking metformin?

I found interesting articles on the internet: 1)"Melatonin was shown to protect kidney damage caused by obesity with diabetes" ...scientists from the University of Granada, the Hospital Universitario La Paz (Madrid), and the University of Texas (U.S.) have taken an important step in the fight against kidney damage and its progression toward kidney failure... Published in the Journal of Clinical Medicine and Pharmaceuticals.

2) "Metformin inhibits disease progression in non-diabetic chronic kidney disease" ... researches from Kumamoto University (Japan) have found that the anti-diabetic drug metformin significantly prolongs the survival of mice in a model that simulates the pathology of non-diabetic kidney disease... I would also like to ask if melatonin and/or metformin have any positive effect on inhibiting the development of prostate cancer? One clinical trial showed that metformin has no effect on prostate cancer, but maybe metformin in combination with other drugs could work better?

I've been on both for about 2 years, Melatonin 60mg twice a day, evening and bedtime. Metformin 750mg twice a day. Both are part of COC recommendations along with Atorvastatin, Mebendazole,Loratidine,Doxycycline. Time will tell as to their benefit or lack thereof. I can say that the metformin has lowered my blood glucose readings from slightly elevated to normal.

I take melatonin to help with sleep at night. Sleep is good for the body and cancer.

1. I'm not diabetic or obese, and have no opinion on melatonin.2. Metformin probably has no effect on prostate cancer progression as a monotherapy. This will be definitive one way or another when we get results from the STAMPEDE RCT in a few years. Here's the best evidence so far:

prostatecancer.news/2019/11...

It's been suggested that it may have some effect when combined with statins. One study suggests that it can mitigate a possible stimulatory effect of statins on the cancer. The studies are just observational and are all over the place.

I quickly read through your link. At the end--the reference about the recalls of Metformin. Country of manufacture primarily or source of raw ingredients secondly but failure either intentionally or unintentionally by the QC and QA departments of the manufacturer should be closely scrutinized.

Berberine or LifeExtension's AMPK would of course be somewhat suitable alternatives to Metformin.

The dose is easier to control with a manufactured product.

I have been taking Melatonin since 30 years..3mg/d

Still got APC may be hereditary

or old age as my lady onco says

I laughed on medical science

But who cares....I got it... knowing well Medical knowledge is not a science but more complex and should be human...

Regarding Metformin...Nice study shows no affect...normal PC is not glucose driven...

It was badly designed to show it does not work as big pharma wanted

Most of RCT studies are paid by big pharma ...It means what it means for off label drugs

However, AtorvaStatin is more positive as PC is lipid lover along with testosterone

======

I have been taking 500 mg of metformin and 10 mg atorvastatin....since 2 years

Had PSA 30 then had ADT and RT with some oligo spots on pelvis T3BN0M1

Even this staging makes me laugh....M1..;

One bone spot or all over it is all the same laughable..I may guess the stupid logic behind

Now the precision of new pet scans...which is not fully integrated in saying metastasis is no curable...a wrong statement

==========

May be a snake oil....but it does not bother me as statin keeps check on Cholesterol which is <180...

Since a year PSA <0.006...... no body will ever know if supplements I take do help

Seems a French group doing some RCT....on statin cum metformin but depends how it is designed and who is paying..

.if big pharma we know the results and

how results are interpreted... same results one group calls negative and others may call it positive...

The COC guys have their own cocktail....again question of belief....

RCT gives some general framework and the rest is on one's own PC journey.... Each person has a different journey for same initial diagnosis

APC has its particular journey adapted to each human being....

=======

I feel supplements are a must

Just to give an example of Hot flashes....

I find chemical drug toxic and should be avoided

So I did acupressure...googling on menopause....reduce 50 %

Then did Massage essential oils...sage , niaouli, fennel , lavender and primrose oil

reduced by 80 %.....

When in remission....key is supplements well-chosen....

Have a nice journey

20 mgs melatonin

Thank you all for your answers. The conclusion suggests to me that metformin in combination with other drugs may provide some benefit. I take Bicalutamide 150mg and Atorvastatin 80mg. In addition, I take metformin, but only 500 mg (a larger dose does not tolerate my digestive tract). I also take 3mg melatonin, but now, following your example, increase the dose. Also vitamin D3, turmeric, etc.

1. All PCa patients should control blood sugars and insulin. Hence metformin

2. All Pca patients need a good night's sleep. Hence melatonin.

Metformin does more than just improving blood sugar control and insulin resistance. It also helps activate Sirtuin mediated epigenetic processes that help protect the genome. Genomic instability /accumulated mutations is one of the main drivers of cancer progression, along with inflammation. So it may not help to cure PC but it May prevent or slow its progression to a more advanced stage. That is why I take 1500 mg per day of metformin even though not diabetic or pre-diabetic.

I take 30 mg of melatonin at bedtime and 1000 mg of metformin morning and evening. Both were recommended by an oncologist. Not diabetic or pre-diabetic. Also take 80mg of statin and 400 mg of Celebrex.

Thank you, Celebrex is a very good drug, but I cannot take it because I am taking Olmetec 20mg for high blood pressure. This combination can damage the kidneys, the doctor told me. You take 400mg daily, do you have any side effects? Are you examining the kidneys and liver? Are you still taking any hormone medications? Any supplements (Vit D3, turmeric, Vit K2mk7, green tea...)? I hope your condition is stable?

I do monitor kidney and liver function every 4-6 weeks. All good. No side effects from Celebrex. Yes I’m on Firmagon monthly and zytiga with prednisone. I do take other supplements - K2, Ca /Mg/Vit D, and others. Condition is stable.

Thanks and congratulations. I am sure you are well treated. Do you sometimes check Yana`s (You are not alone) forum? Once I read there about a patient who lived for about 20 years treated with hormone therapy. Have you heard about it?

hansjd profile image
hansjd in reply to donits

No I'm not familiar with Yana's forum. Certainly like the sound of 20 years survival ... but I'd be 94 (since diagnosis), so it might not happen lol. Cheers
