Is there anyone who's thyroid is dysfunctional due to prostate cancer treatments?

A doctor suggested that I take nature-throid to try and adjust my thyroid levels in order to increase my energy. My thyroid test levels dont look abnormal to me. Does anyone have a thyroid problem and could it be related to treating your prostate cancer? I don't want to start on another prescription and just cause new problems, like Levaquin did for my lung infection earlier this year.

If your thyroid tests are normal(and by the way they should be normal to your Dr, not just you) then why take anything? I am fatigued and tired from ADT. But the more I work out, the stronger I feel.

That's my concern. I'm amazed at how doctors like to force drugs on people without regard for making things worse. My TSH is 2.56, Free T4 1.25, Free T3 3.1, anti tpo <9, T3 reverse 10.5 Im not sure if you have taken those tests but I wanted to include them in case you were aware of them. They are all in the normal range.

Hi GeorgeGlass

I have a very well respected endocrinologist treating my thyroid. Ideally TSH is below 1. The ranges you are looking at for normal TSH are being revised downward. My father was given Synthroid with a TSH similar to yours and he feels much better. It’s been a few years now. Might be worth trying. Feel free to private message me if you want more information.

PS: any TSH over 2 triggers further study/ treatment

OK thanks, I just don't want to start on new treatments of nature-throid, which might cause problem with my heart rate or other side effects. I read that it can affect heart beat and heart rate.

Hi Again GeorgeGlass

My father has HBP which was poorly controlled on medication prior to his thyroid being treated. After he went on Synthroid, his blood pressure became much easier to control with medication.

Thyroid dysfunction can cause a complex cascade affecting blood pressure regulation.

thanks, that makes sense. for me, my blood pressure is great. My numbers are pretty good except for HDL 31, B12 2000 and glucose 103. I just dont want to start adjusting the thyroid and potententially create an issue. If I start on nature-thoid then wont i have to stay on it forever?

Last blood tests found out high TSH (6.8) - hypothyroidism.

Last two years I was trated with Lupron Abiraterone and Prednisone.

I asked my MO if it could be related to the treatments but she wouldnt know so I guess she havent seen any such cases.

Anyway, I was put on Euthryrox.

Yes my thyroid was affected by a clinical trial I was on. Thyroid meds at least for me we’re not a factor in any pain issues.

Did the thyroid meds cause you any issues? Did you use nature-throid, or something else? the doc wants me to be on nature throid but i am not sure it will make things better for me.

I take Synthroid 75 mg daily. No I don’t feel they caused me any issues. I’ve never tried anything else so nature-thyroid is not familiar to me. Hope that helps.

Not sure if you are seeing an endocrinologist or regular MD but I recommend going to the endocrinologist especially when you are under Prostate cancer treatment.

My thyroid got messed up due to immunotherapy Keytruda / pembroluzimab. First it went very high then super low. Now I’m on thyroxine trying to balance it out. But seems easy to manage and Keytruda is certainly worth any side-effects for me

Late to reply here, but I'll throw in my $0.02.

The first drug I had to take every day was levothyroxine at age 60. I was extremely sleepy in the afternoon, and my thyroid numbers were out if normal range. It helped clear that up, and had no effect on my other blood numbers.

ADT starting at 64 has screwed up my blood pressure, cholesterol, etc, but thyroid numbers stayed the same.

Ray, what were your thyroid test numbers before and after the thyroid medicine? What are the side effects of the thyroid med? My doc is recommending Nature Throid.

George, I will have to look that up. I was definitely out of range, and have been kept in range. No side effects of medication at all, and my ADT has been working very well.

Yes. One of the drugs in a clinical trial damaged my thyroid and I take synthesis now.
