It will probably surprise few of us that libido-reducing Firmagon has been found to be useful for treating pedophiles in a small Swedish study. They found that it had rapid onset of action (it is a direct GnRH antagonist). However, its effect on self-reported risk was far from complete, and we don't know if it will actually change behavior. It didn't increase their empathy or impulse control.

I'm guessing that there might be some who would gladly take the pill in exchange for avoiding a lengthy and unpleasant prison sentence. Compliance could easily be measured by periodic T tests. You might be on to something but the ACLU would likely oppose it strenuously.
It's an injection, and it's very legal, but it's not a cure.

Kind of surprising to see this raised here, but have to admit it's a topic that crossed my mind more than once during Zoladex days... I'd previously wondered what the "chemical castration" one hears of as being applied to paedophiles really meant, and how compliance was monitored - but having experienced four of those three monthly injections, I came to the view that compliance would be no problem, and that the sentence would fit the crime quite well.
I don't know if this method is widely practised anywhere, but the biggest issue would surely be the inhumanity of subjecting men to almost certain depression and cardiovascular damage. I reckon ADT well and truly surpasses any "cruel and inhuman" punishment definition we could agree on.

A functioning penis is desired but the sickness is mental, a psychopathology.
Removing one factor reduces the chances of aberrant behavior but I would never trust a child molester. It is also about control, being in a position of power in some cases or being unable to relate to those their own age in others.
Interesting though--thinking of some half remembered parts of old Woody Allen movies about how sex is dealt with in future societies--why did he come to mind?

If you Google this, you'll find that chemical castration for sex offenders is in use all over the world. It causes a reduction in sex crimes, since it removes libido, but it doesn't reduce the number to zero.
Yes, as suggested above, the ACLU is trying to ban its use in the U.S., arguing that it's tantamount to torture, but, predictably, they're running into the "get tough on crime" people.
I went on ADT about 6 months before IMRT; I needed to wait for radiation until the scars from another operation healed. When I met with my RO, he asked me how I was doing, and, through my tears I replied, "How the f*** do you think I'm doing? I got the same punishment that our society inflicts on our serial rapists and child molesters. I feel like s*** every second of every day. I desperately want to kill myself, but I can't because I have loved ones. At this point I understand this punishment, and yes, those bastards deserve it, but I didn't do anything wrong. I just want to f***ing die."
To my surprise, he was shocked to hear this. I didn't understand at the time that most men don't have SEs at the level I did.
Fortunately, I was able to get on antidepressants, and my T recovered nicely when I quit ADT half-way through my sentence.
Were not some rapist in the past offered a choice of freedom if they accepted castration? Seems cruel. Unless you knew there victims. Then I’d say off with the balls. I did it in hopes to thwart APC . Plus , I’m still on adt ... pedophilia is a crime that should revive the severest consequences. Castration is too good for them even . That’s a hard crime to be forgiven by any parent.
Depressing the ability to engage in sexual activity and to a lesser degree diminishing the urge addresses biological determinants but does little to mollify the psychological/behavioral determinants.......eg breaking an over eaters jaw will certainly diminish his ability to eat but does little to control the “root” causes of the behavior...... it works but it is far from a “cure”...... Still, a little is better than nothing

I doubt that the idea is to force men with pedophilic disorder to take it. The idea must be to have something that can be given to help-seeking pedophiles and prevent those terrible crimes. What are the alternative treatments? Someone who thinks psychotherapy cures pedophile? No a chance.

Interesting. Lupron can be given in 3, 4 or 6 month shots which may be preferable. From my own experience, I have no desire for sex after 4 years of Lupron (and I love my wife even more). Multidrug therapy may be better. How about shock therapy or lobotomy...only half serious. As a condition of not being incarcerated, they should have no choice.

An alternative is leuprolide.

Doctors periodically do blood tests to monitor the effects of these drugs on liver function, as well as other tests (including bone density tests and blood tests to measure testosterone levels). It is not clear how useful these drugs are in women who are pedophiles.
Antidepressants called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) may also be helpful. They may help control sexual urges and fantasies. They also decrease the sex drive and may cause erectile dysfunction.
Drug treatment is more effective when it is combined with psychotherapy and training in social skills.
