1) overdoing it

2) or should not do some of them

3) overtaxing my poor kidneys and should do them on alternate days

Thanks guys, my love to all 😍

Haniff....Supplement issue is touchy and contentious on this forum. There are huge supporters on one side and then, there are huge naysayers on other side. And this split causes little bickering off and on.

Let me analyse your supplement collection one by one.

(1) Vitamin D3: very important vitamin specially for people with PCa. Best source is 30 minutes of Sunlight every day. Supplement of Vit D should ideally be taken after knowing blood level of it as excessive Vit D can accumulate in liver and may cause toxicity.

If checking level not practically feasible, just taking 1000 Units a day may be more than sufficient,

(2) Curcumin/turmeric: This is a golden stuff..time and again hundreds of studies all over the World have found that it works as AntiInflammatory, Anti Oxidant and Anti Cancer and might slow/stop cancer cell replication. This one is my number one favorite.

(3) Vitamin C: helps with immunity,,thats what people say. It is basically harmless stuff. Lemons, limes, Amla berry, oranges etc have plenty of this Vitamin. Even if one takes excessive amount...it is thrown out in Urine ...just makes your urine bright yellow color.

(4) Berberine is like natural metformin. Now, there is lot of info that metformin does slow PCa growth. I will not mind taking Berberine but will monitor my liver function .

(5) Vit B12: Unless your blood shows low levels of B-12...less of it is better.

Its probably better to take a VIt B Complex tab than only B12 tab.

Too much intake of B12 can adversely affect PCa ..some studies say.

(6) Magnesium, Iodine and Potassium: If you eat good amount of veggetables, fruits ,seeds and nuts..there is really no need for these three supplements...Taking potassium supplement every day can be dangerous because it can lead to hyperkalemia which can further cause heart problem. Level of blood pottasium should be checked and if it is at 4 or higher, no need for potassium supplement.

I hope this information help you to take supplements safely and in right amounts.

Some beneficial foods /supplements to be considered: Cruciferous vegetables (Cauliflower, brocolli, Cabbage, Radishes) ..Tomatoes / lycopene....Pomegranade and Grape seed powder .

Zinc from eating pumpkin seeds and last but not least..Ginger root.

My rule is ..natural form is preferable to artificial or synthetic form as long as possible.

The majority of men with PCa will or have used a supplement for PCa.

A minority view supplements as a scam.

When used for cancer, as opposed to a way of supplying nutrients insufficiently found in the diet, they are untested drugs. One arguement is that it might be counterproductive to take pharmaceutical doses before there has been a rigorous clinical trial. Another view is that none of them work - although that has not yet been proven in a rigorous clinical trial. LOL

My feeling is that if standard care will only give one a median survival of a few years, it is foolish to disregard supplements.

I have just searched PubMed for <prostate curcumin> & got 399 hits.

I added <analog> to the search & found that 110 of those studies were looking at potential drugs based on curcumin. If one turns out to be super-effective, we will be charged $5,000 or more a month to use it.

In any event, the smart money is looking at curcumin, so why shouldn't we?

Just one example.

But most curcumin supplements do not deliver. It's important to understand how a supplement might help, but also to avoid shoddy suppliers.

A few thoughts in addition to what others have said: you may want to take vitamin K with D. The way I understand it, D helps absorb calcium from diet, but K is what helps it get into the bones in addition to possibly attacking cancer directly.

Also, my MO reccommended taking B complex when I complained of possible neuropathy during chemotherapy and it does seem to be helping!

I also drink a whey protein shake every couple days as it's easily digested protein and my digestive seems to have trouble with absorption during chemo. I use the cheap stuff that has creatine and taurine added which have been recommended as individual supplements in other threads.

And finally, I'm taking celecoxib and atorvastatin for pain and high cholesterol, but also have some studies indicating increased survival in prostate cancer patients.

And of course, I can't say this enough: EXERCISE!

Haniff profile image
Haniff in reply to tom67inMA

Hahaha Tom, yes exercise is really important but with this virus in the air, our government has been advising us to do it indoors. So I have been doing simple calisthenics and aerobics by getting ideas from YouTube.

Also thanks for sharing what you’re doing to boost and motivate yourself ❀️

Haniff

in reply to Haniff

It is definitely harder to exercise. But you can get some dumbbells, bands, a door pullup bar (I think they're about $25 or so), and even a medicine ball if you want. If you force yourself to exercise religiously for a few weeks, you might find yourself addicted to the feeling. I worked out a lot in my teens and twenties. I stopped when I was in grad school. Life happens and I hit a snag in the road of good mental health. My doctor recommended that I exercise. I was hating life but I forced myself to exercise daily for a few weeks, the neuro-transmitters kicked in, and I haven't stopped for almost 30 years. Now I start feeling blue if I take a few days off. I have to find ways to weight-lift multiple times a day without overtraining.

And some good music is helpful. And a routine (something like get up, prep, workout, eat, ...)

I can't see what the dose of B12 is in the photo, but that is the one in the group that I'd be most wary of (taking too much, too frequently) unless specifically indicated. Although it is essential, the body typically requires very, VERY small amounts. High doses MAY in some instances contribute to rising PSA (as reported in at least one observational study).

Haniff profile image
Haniff in reply to noahware

Hi Noahware

Sure will keep an eye out on the B12 as some brothers have also brought it to my attention.

Thanks Bro ❀️

Haniff

I take very little b12 in a bone complex.

Magnus1964 profile image

Over the years I have taken a lot of supplements. I treat them as I do standard medicine. If my PSA begins to rise I assume my cancer has found a work-around to that one and move on to another.

Through it all the only vitamin do continue to take is vitamin D3. A doctor told me to have my D3 level checked. Sure enough it was very low.

I am a big believer in monotherapy with few exceptions. My advice is to do your own research do what feels right for you. Above all tell your doctor what your taking. Many doctors will tell you it does no good. That is his/her opinion.

Hi Magnus

You’re my role model Bro. I want to be able to hold on to my beautiful life as long as possible as you’ve done ❀️

Ok will run through with my oncologist when my appointment is due next and yes you’re right, I’ve asked before and he said supplements don’t help. But no harm asking though. Thanks Brother, my best to you.

The onco will most likely say no to much . Western med doesn’t care much for nutrients .. I follow a naturalpathic .. ✌️

in reply to Haniff

Do your research. Look for real results instead of speculation and case studies. I have an NMD, an MO, and a PCP. The PCP and the MO think that D is important. The NMD thinks that everything is important (sometimes it seems like it anyway). I do my own research, then I decide what is right for me in my particular situation, and then run it by my MO to see if there is something I'm planning to do that could hurt me. I also discuss my proposed additions/deletions with my NMD.

I don’t take the c or Berberine ? I do take about five others that you don’t have here . ? How do feel taking these. It’s a pain in the butt and costly too. I look at it like we are at least trying to help our selves. Food is medicine too.. let’s eat right too..I think you’re doing good , others will give their expertise. Take care Haniff !πŸ’ͺπŸ€™πŸ½

Hi Whimpy-p

Yup you’re right Bro, taking these supplements does put a dent in the good old leather wallet but I am trying to push the envelope further with these supplements.

To be very honest, to you and all my good brothers and sisters on this motivating forum, I am at a lost.

Let me explain: After doing 6 cycles of Chemo, and on 3 monthly Lucrin jabs, other than praying, eating right, juicing and eating fruits and vegetables more than I’ve ever done in all my 57 years before being diagnosed in late 2017, exercising daily, being mindful and grateful, even, even accepting the lost of my libido ( πŸ₯΄πŸ˜© ). Not doing anything else seems like kind of I am not doing anything to help myself...just that feeling that I should do more...but what! So to make a very long story short and sweet, taking vitamins seems to help me feel better and determined to keep Death at a great, great Social Distance...hahaha, but you know what I mean πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

Phew...this is what happens when you have to stay home and rich with time, you tend to ramble πŸ˜€

Others ...

Vicodin

Total daily intake about 39 drugs / pills daily ( minus the opiates ) the top group are the supplements I’ve discovered on the group

My psa has been undetectable for 17 months now , down from 1400 at DX. Unfortunately the adt is devastating my body , nearly making me Crippled/ immobilized, and making my cardiac rhythms, alt - liver , blood glucose and blood pressure unstable. Other than that, no biggie. As always it’s vital you discuss your supplement regimen with your medical support team. My onc is taking notes about my supplements and is fully on board with it ... particularly since I’m a croaker anyway. He doesn’t feel like they will hurt me at this point, so if I want them ...have at it .

😁

in reply to Kaliber

What a line up ? I like the nutrients . Sam-e helps me a lot . Calmer and more energy with it than before . Raw saffron threads.mm m good medicine also . She gets our saffron from Persia for cooking. That flavor that you always want to eat more of. ?

Yea I got the Sam-e from you when you flashed a picture of your extensive supplement line up yayahahahaya. A couple of others too I think, maybe the saffron. Remember when I asked you about them? Got the fruit pectin from Nal etc.

I look at the successful guys like you as the example ,...

success speaks for itself. I want some of that too . Makes you feel like you are trying to take an active role in your own survival πŸ’ͺπŸ’ͺπŸ’ͺπŸ’ͺ✌️✌️✌️

in reply to Kaliber

I took the c-pectin got my first two years until nat dr told me to drop it . Say even if it’s a placebo effects , it’s something. Probiotics rely helps my gut function. I’m good on Sam -e , Don ever plan to cut that either . APC is a damed circus πŸŽͺ

Probably near 100% of the top group of β€œ supplements β€œ I take came from advice of well established knowledgeable people here in the group. That , strongly based in supportive knowledge found on google. I was clueless about them before coming here. If they , all together, only give you a few percentile of benefit .... it’s good. Seems like most of those guys using them like whimpy-p , Nal and the others have ALL been hanging on for 5 to 18 years or more. I want some of that too yayahahahaya.

My research medical oncologist to me, β€œDo you take supplements.” Me, β€œNo”. Medical oncologist, β€œ Good. I don’t want you to screw up my treatment for you.. if you take anything, anything at all, tell me first. β€œ

During six months of chemo, he prescribed 500 mg of Vitamin C, three times a day. I never viewed this as a supplement; only part of his treatment.

My advice, discuss supplements with your medical oncologist.

My Dr told me no high dose anything. He said it’s proven to cause more death than not. I did high c IV’s throughout treatments anyway along with many other daily nutrients. After I went in to remission . Dr said whatever you’re doing keep doing it .Hahoo!

in reply to

Was it IV’s?

in reply to

No. Oral only. Nothing IV. Taxotere and Adrimyacin were via port-a-cath. The later was a 24 hour pump.

Your B12 dose seems too high for a daily intake. You could take it every three days. I am a vegan and must take it. Are you a vegan or vegetarian?

Hi CalBear

I eat a plant based diet which I sometimes add lean chicken for protein. Noted about the B12 and will take it every 2-3 days time frame. Thanks Brother for the advice ❀️

Sorry about your Dad’s demise all these years ago, he is in my prayers.

Oh yes, brain fog has been a big part of my life after the chemo. And it was really hard on me the last year or so just before I retired from teaching. The problem with taking supplements without clinical trial data is that sometimes they work against you. So, unproven supplements are risky. Active ingredient amounts have been found by 3rd party labs to vary widely. Sometimes zero active ingredients! Sometimes 3rd party labs find large amounts of pesticides, radiation, or heavy metals. For example, 8 brands of psyllium husks were tested by consumerlab.com. 5 were high in lead. One was so high that a single teaspoon got you to about 100% of your permissible lead exposure for a day per the FDA. I could go on and show more counterdata.

That said, I take some supplements when the trial data or pre-trial data shows me that the risk/reward ratio might be on my side.

I take curcumin - novasol and a couple of other brands might be better than most.

Sulforaphane is my top supplement outside of diet and exercise.

My MO and my PCP both agree that vitamin D should be 30-50 ng/ml in the serum. More is apparently worse per mortality and cancer J-curves. You might consult your MO and PCP about taking K2 with the D3.

I get my vitamin C from food. I doubt it does a lot for or against you to take some supplemental C. Probably just a waste of a few bucks, some liver and kidney burden, and a higher risk of kidney stones.

I've tested the short-term blood sugar effects of berberine. Nothing. Maybe it works long-term but metformin and exercise and even food effects (e.g. fats) show short-term improvement. These were controlled experiments but only on one person and only over hours. I repeated each one at least a few times.

B-12 is dangerous unless you are truly deficient and need a very low dose of B-12 (100% of RDA or less). I'd talk to my PCP and MO before I took B-12.

Magnesium and potassium might be okay but it depends on your electrolyte levels. Most people don't need extra. Only a few of us need to supplement (me for example when I do certain hormonal and exercise programs. If I don't supplement I start to get severe sporadic muscle cramping - goes away rapidly when I consume electrolytes [magnesium, potassium, sodium, phosphorus, calcium]).

In general I try to keep the supplements low. They aren't controlled for amounts or purity.
