Antioxidants

I’m aware of the situation with antioxidants and cancer, in particular with chemo. I was told that Alpha Lipoic Acid 600 mg daily and B-6 50 mg daily can help with neuropathy from Taxotere. I’m curious as to hear from others on this.

Related: what about antioxidants in conjunction with immunotherapy (Keytruda) any science on that?

Thanks

Whenever a cancer cell is destroyed, either by mitotic catastrophe (chemo) or killer T cells, the cells use free radicals to initiate the biochemical destruction. You interfere with those biochemical processes at your own risk.

Certainly I expected two strong opinions on this - thank you for both responding. Specifically to the question of antioxidants helping with neuropathy- is there science on that? This advice came from a PA in a cancer center

I have deep neuropathy resulting from chemo a year ago. PA’s at two cancer centers both recommended trying ALA. with B6 you have to be careful as too much can make things worse

Did you take these supplements? If so, was there any improvement?

I did take them and no I did not notice improvement so I stopped recently. While taking these and Keytruda my PSA went form 86 to undetectable. I am wondering why they are being promoted from trained staff at cancer centers if they may also interfere with treatment? I can deal with numb feet. I’m interested in the science and biochemistry of this and why there are such strong divergent opinions in this group

I pop an Alpha Lipoic Acid once in a while. But I think you have to mainline it to get any results. I've been using an auto shutoff heating pad for my cold and numb foot neuropathy. I am also taking Tramadol 37.5 mg with 325 mg acetaminophen (Ultracet). Welcome to the first floor of the opioid elevator. Also Gabapentin, which I don't really think was working. (Maybe not letting it get worse?) I know many sneer at Tramadol, but it has made a real difference for me. I am doing things now I wouldn't have dreamed about 6 months ago. (Spinal disc issues). Anyway, neuropathy seems to be getting somewhat better. What is helping it I don't know. My doctor was ok with heating pad, but I would check with your doctor first, especially if you have diabetes. And make sure it has auto shutoff!! You don't want to wake up to the smell of bacon and find out it's your feet.
