Zytiga (abiraterone acetate)

Does anybody get their Zytiga (abiraterone acetate) from India? My Aetna prescription plan was bought out by Wellcare and the co-pay went way up. Been to the Medicare.gov site etc. Out of India it's around $300 a month.

I bought it from India. I paid just over $400 for a 3-month supply. It was delivered to my door in about 10 days.

It is made by at least two reputable Pharma companies Glenmark and Cipla. I have been in the Pharma manufacturing as head of what is now Astra-Zeneca's India operation that was manufacturing beta blockers like Atenolol - Tenormin. In 1990 I had all the locally made Tenormin tested in the laboratories in the UK. I found that there were a few which were within tolerable limits of British Pharmacopia standards some were having lesser purity. This was triggered by the US Consulate General who told me that what he took from India to the US was not as effective for his BP. Cost was of course one fifteenth. The other problem we found was that in India the process can be patented but the drug cannot. Hence, using good organic chemists one could almost make any compound by a different process. The active ingredient is not a problem but the allowed impurities in the British Standard are different from those made by each manufacturer using a different process. These are then not tested for excretion and other tests but based on the approval of the original drug the active ingredient can be approved. This may or may not be a problem. However, remember that this was in 1990. In the 30 years since the Indian drug industry has matured and are making products sold and effectively used around the world. Of course there are problems in management of GMP practices and that is where some of the Indian companies sometimes falter. However, it is too good a business to allow these problems to become real issue with the FDA. I am sure that the Indian generic Zytiga from both Glenmark and Cipla will be just as effective.

Are you on Medicare? I am and switched from Aetna/Wellcare to Cigna. The retail price from 2 pharmacies with the Cigna medicare partD plan is $285. Costco pharmacy uses FDA approved generic from a pharmaceutical company called Novadoz. It was FDA approved over the summer. Aetna would not let me buy that brand last summer, but Cigna is now. I don't know if things have changed but see if they will approve buying it at Costco pharmacy now.
