Reducing saturated fat intake may delay progression in men with MYC amplification

This was only a mouse study, but they also looked at animal fat/saturated fat intake of metastatic men treated at some top institutions. They found an association between dietary saturated fat intake and PC lethality in men with metastatic disease who had a specific kind of tumor mutation called MYC amplification. About 37% of men with metastatic PC have MYC amplification.

What's more, they were able to extend life in mice with MYC amplification that were fed a low-fat diet. It also found that mice with PIN (a pre-malignant condition) progressed to MYC amplification when fed a high saturated fat diet. Dietary saturated fat intake had no effect if there was no PIN or no MYC amplification. Polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fat had no effect.

MYC amplification is something they can test for with a tumor biopsy. This study is not good evidence, but since reducing saturated fat intake is beneficial for the heart anyway, this seems like a no-brainer.

There is a saying :what is good for heart is good for prostate" Low fat diet is good for heart and therefore it has to be good for prostate. We use Grape seed oil, avocado oil or olive oil only....in our cooking.

Healthy low fat plant based diet, daily physical exercise and keeping stress low by relaxation/meditation are good for heart and prostate.

Good points.

We have to keep in mind that there are things other than cancer that could kill us.

My doctor was telling me about one of his patients. He told me he had treated him succesfully and he was in remission. Then he had a heart attack and died.

Eat healthy and exercise.

My PCa

treatment clinic strongly recommends a heart-healthy diet, exercise and a positive attitude for their patients. Seems right.

I am totally screwed. I thought my diet of mice would be the next best thing. I guess it's back to leaves and grass.

How long will you live eating leaves and grass ?? :-)

Instead enjoy pork belly loaded with tender fat or T-bone steaks with lots of fat, etc, etc.

And, as far as exercise is concerned, aren't you concerned about joint injuries and various other problems (do a google search) one could get by over exercising ??

As for me, my diet will remain the same.

As for exercise, I do exercise my mind :-) And, I will always continue to do so.

Cheers, monte1111 !!! :-)

Author Farley Mowatt wrote a novel about his experiences studying wolves, noting that they eat the whole mouse, which he said he began to do during his study. H

e later admitted that this was fictional, as was his novel. Interested in any studies done on this by members here.....Recipes, please.

After PCA dx, I dropped sources of saturated fat such as peanut butter, steak 3x/wk, and whole milk, substituting things like plant protein powder, almond milk, and avocado, dropping LDL from 138 to 110, and triglycerides from 75 to 44.

No-brainer? Somewhat annoying that the saturated fat recommendation perhaps is not a simple black or white issue. Within the class of saturated fats, there are could be both ‘good’ and ‘bad’ saturated fats. Butter is ‘bad’ but coconut might be ‘good’?

bmjopen.bmj.com/content/8/3...

Randomised trial of coconut oil, olive oil or butter on blood lipids and other cardiovascular risk factors in healthy men and women

butter: participants had an average increase in LDL cholesterol (‘bad’?)

coconut oil: small decrease in LDL cholesterol for the coconut oil group (‘good’?)

They focussed on animal fats.

I suspect if you have a low BMI in or near to the normal range and low blood lipids then if you enjoy some butter, cheese a nice bit of belly pork or a steak with some fat on it from time to time then it does not make much difference.

Exercise and eating healthily definitely does extend the life of cancer patients, the question is how much is enough.

I was pretty healthy before I was diagnosed and I am continuing in the same vein but I still very much want to enjoy the good things in life and I do not want to chain myself to a treadmill or eat rice bran everyday for the rest of my life

Interestingly, they found that the relationship between saturated fat intake and MYC activation was true irrespective of BMI. There was no association in the 63% of men without MYC amplification. It's a good idea to check it, if possible, before deciding. But there may be more pressing reasons to cut down on saturated fats.

That's my attitude as well: do this for your heart first. If it helps with PCa, that's an added bonus.

My brother did not do low fat and ended up with 2 stints and bladder cancer that came back this year and colon cancer, he is 80. I went on low fat after my dad had a stroke at 54 and lived untill 74, he liked his animal fat and smoked. I am on lipitor from years ago but now limit ref meat to about 6 times a month, eat mostly fish, chicken and turkey for protein. Occasional cheese and ice cream, 2 percent milk in coffee, chocolate almond milk once in awhile. Am doing good except the triglycerides is on the high side due to the lupron shot.
