Swollen testicles

Hi, my father was diagnosed with prostate Ca in 2017. Gleason score 7 (4+3). Lung and bone mets involvement. He has undergone radiation and currently undergoing chemo.

Now he has swelling of his testicles which is painful for him. Any thoughts on what the cause and the remedy might be?

I had a friend who, without having cancer, was suffering from abdomen pain and a swollen testicle. He was diagnosed with a hernia. So maybe that's a possibility.

Thank you so much for your response Gleason9guy! The swelling occurred after reinsertion of a Foley’s catheter.

It could be epididymitis or orchitis due to a bacterial infection from the catheter.... is so, possibly a round of antibiotics would help.

Thank you so much timotur! The oncologist did say it was an infection and started him on Augmentin.

My husband had the same swelling plus urinary difficulties, this was just prior to diagnosis

He was commenced on s drug called Flomaxtra and those symptoms abated within two weeks

Sure sounds like the Foley...

Wearing one of those things are almost as bad as hearing from my ex-wife.....

He had to be admitted for emergency surgery to clean the area. It was becoming gangrenous.

What frustrates me is that after he had the partial prostate removal last year he’s been having continuous bleeding from his penis. Oncologist thought it was cancer-related but now it is strongly believed it could be a complication from prostate surgery that is causing it. Oncologist is also against the long-term Foley use. He’s had several blood transfusions to maintain his hemoglobin levels especially for chemo.

H S that stand for HOLY SHIT.... poor man... Actually I never heard of a "partial" prostate removal, but maybe someone here has. Was it a robotic surgery or the "hands on" type?

Does the surgeon have a lot of experience in partial removals and what does he say about your Dad's current condition? I just pray that your DAD is not in pain and that they clear up this situation fast and thorough. Look I hate to say this with all the troubles you have but the expression is 'lawyer up" and document everything. I am not an attorney or did I ever wish to be one but sometimes there is a need for a good one. I will keep you DAD in my prayers... the list is getting overwhelming...

Thank you for all your advice j-o-h-n. My dad had sepsis and had to be admitted. Thank God he is recovering now in the ICU.

I’ve had my doubts about his urologist but who am I to conclude anything about my dad’s medical condition, I am not a doctor. I am not sure what approach the surgeon used. When I asked him why he didn’t remove the entire prostate, he said the cancer might spread.

Retrospectively, 9 months of continuous bleeding and having a Foley does not sound right to me at all.

I forgot to mention as well, the urologist diagnosed him with prostate cancer in 2017. Bone scan was done. Urologist did not refer to an oncologist but started him on Casodex I believe. I’m curious to know, are urologists allowed to treat prostate cancer patients without involving oncology? It doesn’t make sense to me. We only knew about dad’s cancer diagnosis late last year. Dad did not want to tell us.

I pray for all those who are sick and are suffering.

I asked my urologist if it was time to see or add an oncologist to the team. He bragged about his extensive experience treating prostate cancer and assured me that he was up on all the drug remedies. I received HIFU surgery from an out-of-state urologist and so far so good on that. I am not metastatic (so far, knock on formica).

When my dad was diagnosed with prostate cancer, a bone scan was done around that time as well. I did notice in that scan that there was bone involvement already. When the second scan was done this year, the spots on the scan increased. Did the urologist miss the spots on the first scan? I am not sure.

My dad is currently being treated for prostate cancer with bone metastasis.

Yes the urologist can treat your Dad, but best to get a "good" Genitourinary Pca oncologist, if you can find one. If you wish to switch ask HERE for a good one in your location. Ask in a future post not today. As far as your Dad keeping a secret... that's men for you. I guess he was trying to spare you the concern and worrying. That tells me how nice a man he his....

He is an amazing man. He’s very unselfish and patient.

The oncologist recommended another urologist. We’ll see how that goes. At this point, I’m encouraging my parents to be assertive and not be ashamed to ask and clarify with the docs. The notion that ‘docs know best, end of story’ does not work for me at all.
