Denver, CO recommendation

I am asking for a friend who lives in Denver, CO area. He is being told by his Urologist that they need to become more active in their surveillance. His latest psa is 7 and he will have a biopsy soon. Where and who do you recommend for him in terms of a center of excellence and should he graduate to a MO?

In Denver, TUCC, The Urology Center of Colorado is a first rate operation. Maybe a LITTLE bit (and maybe not) more advanced would be University of Colorado Health Care Center at Anschutz. / Cancer Pavilion.

Yes, with a PSA of 7 a biopsy is certainly called for. An MRI guided biopsy if possible..

We are in Denver but we have Kaiser so we have Kaiser oncologists. We did initially meet with an oncologist (Bernard Shaw?) at Anschutz (University of Colorado) for a second opinion. We also have an appointment at Anschutz in early July about the Vision Trial. Sorry I can’t be of more help recommending oncologists but we are in the area and have been on this adventure for two years now so we are happy to answer any other questions you may have.

Anschutz Urologic Cancer Center is the only pure academic center in the region. They have great clinical specialists and conduct research (not for drug companies and they are honest if a drug company is involved)

I am a retired Kaiser doc and get all my care there. When I needed an unbiased second opinion I went to CU (Anschutz) for it.

We are blessed to have an outstanding academic center in Denver.

Biopsy may OR MAYNOT result in an accurate finding. Your kind of blindly poking around an area you can't see, hoping to take a plug of a tumor.

The fact you did, OR DID NOT, hit anything doesn't mean it is OR ISN'T actually there.

Research more about biopsies. Be informed and aware of not over reacting judging your test results. results.

There are both positives and negatives depending on What is biopsied, Who does it, Who evaluates it, infection risk vs knowledge gained.

It's always your choice concerning invasive treatments.

If your friend will be biopsied may sure he insists that the doctor perform it under anesthesia. Repeat: get him knocked out!

Wow. I don't usually comment on someone's musical interests, but even my 16 y.o. boy - who you know "rocks" hoodies more than Belichick - thought that song sub-par! Now I know some of the darkness that lurks behind your comedic genius, j-o-h-n..... :)

I started this journey with a biopsy performed by a Urologist referred by my PCP. When the results came back positive, I was referred to a MO at the Rocky Mountain Cancer Center (RMCC) where I have been receiving treatments by both a MO and a RO for the past 4 years. Good luck to you and whoever you choose to treat your cancer, if you have it. I will keep my fingers crossed that your biopsy shows no cancer because you don't want to go through this treatment crap.

we live in No. Co but went to UC Anschutz Urology/Oncology Clinic for 2nd opinion. They also have a tumor board. Followed by UC Mo in our area. good luck!

Tough call, 8knots... many of us had PSAs so high that biopsy was almost a formality simply for Gleason categorization... 2dee is also correct, in that with a lower PSA (which may indicate a low tumor burden) the standard 12-core may not pick up a tumor site... and Fairwind is on the money with this... see: ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articl...

Like Chuckujo, I use RMCC for MO and RO. I understand the treatments and really don't need the extra pampering or attention (RMCC is all about the higher-volume cancer treatment business).

However, I use Colorado Urology (Dr. James Clark in Boulder and Dr. David Cahn in Golden are urologists with direct PCa experience) to balance out the oncology world. Without Dr. Clark, I would not have been approved for Provenge, as my oncologist was not a fan.

And, of course, TUCC and CU Anschutz are great.... lots of choices here!

Here is honestly hoping that your friend needs nothing but the results from a clear biopsy! Cheers. - Joe M.

Thanks to all for your input. I am currently on a clinical trial with Lupron, Prednisone, Xtandi and Cabazitaxel. Getting my fourth infusion in about 15 minutes and my psa has been dropping so far. Today it was 1.57. I don't want my buddy to have to go through this and when I heard he was seeing a Urologist I thought I would try to get out in front of it for him....just in case.

Thanks again!
