Resuming nutritional supplements after radiation therapy

I just finished 33 RT treatments last Friday. Those treatments were aimed at the 4 lymph nodes that were detected during my PSMA scan in January. The PSMA scan took place within a clinical study at Yale and was initiated due to BCR of my G9 PCa. In addition to the RT, I've been on ADT (Firmagon) and abiraterone/prednisone since January - and will continue with each for another year in a last ditch attempt to knock out the beast.

A week in advance of the start of RT I stopped all nutritional supplements (except vitamin D and calcium). Now that the RT has concluded should I restart the supplement right away or wait some period of time?

Hello Shueswim

I can't help with your supplements query, save to note that the ROs down this way (Melb, Australia) were quite comfortable for me to resume resveratrol, curcumin etc at the end of the eSRT… then again, they weren't that stressed if I had wanted to keep them up during the program, since they said there was no real evidence they did any harm.

But I would like to ask you about your ADT duration of 18 months - I am in about the same space as you -[ slightly worse pT3b; Decipher 0.91... but got a few months post RRP at PSA<0.01, and started eSRT at PSA= 0.11]. I was recommended to do 24 months ADT - Zoladex, to which I have added Zytiga plus Pred, off-label.

Nearly five months in and I feel crap - so suddenly the 6 months ADT I see all the new trials adopting is looking good.... but I am risk averse. Keen to hear if this issue was discussed much with you....

Heyyyyy nyhubby58 started on supplements about a month ago. They give him energy and took away some of the pain but his PSA has risen from. 57 to .68, now ge is depressed and lm trying with everything in me to be strong for us. We were told by a Holistic Dr that the cancer has spread to thyroids and lungs and liver. He has been diagnosed since July 2017 with stage 4 prostate and metastatic cancer. Next week are going to MD ANDERSON CANCER CENTER IN HOUSTON TEXAS. He also started on Zytiga and prednisone a month ago as well.

Thanks Gene.

Although I'm lucky to have an UD PSA, after seeing many posts on this site, am worried about the palliative route that is pursued at Duke. Saw the PA only at my last visit - Lupron and Prolia as before with no scan because of UD PSA. Next scam planned in 6 months. Just basically waiting until I am castrate resistant to add more drugs.

Very tempted to call either Dr Kwon or the Compassionate Oncology group in LA to see what they might recommend me to do.

My husband waited a couple of months after both radiation treatments before resuming his supplements. The radiation continues to work in your body after treatment, so don’t want to interfere with that.

He has been taking 162 mg of aspirin all the way through radiation and after. RO was okay with that. It seems to help your immune system get to the cancer cells easier due to lowering platelets which attach to the cells.

I had a similar treatment and resumed my supplements after RT. I see no reason to do it any other way.

However, I would keep one thing in mind - there is NOTHING that you should take to support prostate health. The prostate has changed into a 'blob' that doesn't need any help to survive and re-emerge as a 'healthy' friend in your system ....

No, nothing for “prostate health”. My prostate isn’t a blob... it’s long gone.

So your blob was lobbed..mine was robbed..

Where did you finally go for your radiation treatments

I stayed local here in Naples Fl with "21st Century Oncology". After doing my due diligence I concluded that it was my best option. It gave me piece of mind that my local RO has a great background and that he worked closely with a former colleague, Dr. Anthony Zietman, in developing the RT plan.
