Urologist in Minneapolis area

My husband. 69, very recently diagnosed stage 4, with likely (according to mri) lymph node involvement.

Had biopsy recently was on antibiotic (iv) for different issue post biopsy for 10 days. Went off antibiotic Tuesday and now is having prostatitis type symptoms. (Presumably antibiotic had been keeping prostate infection under wraps)

We do not want to go back to MN Urology and are looking for urologist suggestions.

He had a firmagon shot about 9 days ago.

Sorry for rambling. You guys are all wonderful and make this darkness less frightening.

Love and light to all of you.

This is not what you asked for but we loved working with this doctor(oncologist) during his fellowship training at UNM(New Mexico). He has since moved to Minneapolis. He is especially great if you want to take an integrative approach and include nutrition and supplements as well as traditional care.. He is an oncologist. Just a name to add to your list of people to include on your team. Dr Dia Osman - he knows a lot about nutrition and was very supportive of our integrative plan - mnoncology.com/locations-ph...

Sending you tons of love, hugs and prayers!

Thank you for the reference. I looked Dr Osman up and it doesn’t say he treats PC. Did you guys see him for PC? We are holistic thinkers in our house, so it would be nice to have a support person that way.

We did see him for prostate cancer. My husband has Neuroendocrine Prostate Cancer - it was diagnosed at stage 4. Dr Osman continued the care that Dr Arap(who left) had done. At UNM after Dr Arap left there were no doctors who specialized in prostate cancer (GU I think it is referred to) . I liked that Dr Osman was willing to run labs and blood panels on things that nobody else would(nutritional types). I also liked that he was willing to talk about our supplements and encouraged healthy eating and give us that type of support.

Thank you for this info, we really appreciate it?

I’m curious, when your husband got his initial biopsy were they able to see his was neuroendocrine cancer or how was that found?

My father in law died from pc and we’ve already ordered genetic testing. And at what is being called stage 4 my husband’s is about 20.

Thank you for the support, it means a lot and I know you know that already.😊

They were able to see the neuroendocrine cells at his initial biopsy. He had symptoms for over a year. Urologist scheduled biopsy but cancelled because my husbands PSA was so good.(big mistake) Cancer diagnosis was from hip fracture due to mets from cancer. Poor husband was walking around with a broken hip for some time.. I remember Easter of 2017 I bought him a walker because he was having such a hard time walking.(He was seeing a bunch of doctors at the time and they kept brushing it off). I feel very blessed that he has responded well to treatment. It was a nasty chemo but he is still alive with me and I am so happy about that.

Hugs, prayers and love for you and your husband!

Thank you, I’ll call some of the people mentioned on the thread!

I’d be reluctant to use an oncologist that treated so many cancers. How on earth could he be proficient in all of them when there’s so much info out there on each cancer. The consensus on this site is that the best path is an oncologist that specializes in PC

Who did you see at MN Urology?

I see Jeffrey Twidwell and i think he is great. Good bedside manor, sense of humor and one of the few doctors I've developed a trust in.

We saw Dr.Utz. The bedside manner is lacking and with a change like PC some compassion would be nice.

Thank you for the tip!

I would recommend Dr Charles Ryan. I think he’s local to you. I saw Dr Ryan when he was at UCSF on west coast. He’s prostate cancer expert. Best of luck.

This is good to hear about Dr Ryan. We have an appointment with him in mid July and I am hoping he has some ideas.

Hearing he is good from somebody who has experience with him gives me hope!

Dachshund,

I would get your husband to the Mayo in Rochester and see if you can see Dr. Kwon. The Mayo has the ability to get him great care and it’s and easy commute from the cities. It’s very easy to set up and appointment.

I tried setting up an appointment there and we were not offered an appointment. Evidently, they get more appointment requests than they have capacity.

I wish we could get into mayo. it would be much easier.

Did you just call and make an appointment? How long ago was that?

Thank you for the info. We joined a local support group this past Wednesday. We were humbled by the collective intelligence of the group.

If he has Stage 4 metastatic prostate cancer, he should seek out a medical oncologist who specializes in genitourlogical cancers, not any other. He wants some one who is at the top of their game - mom lung, not greasy, not pancreatic, etc. someone who studies and reads, maybe researches cancer of the prostate.

Hi Gourd Dancer

Thank you for the suggestion. We have an apppintment at UCLA on the 26th with Mathew Reddig (Research Dr in PC space) and then we are seeing Dr Ryan at u of m (which is local for us). Our hope is to get more info second opinion from Rettig and possibly psma scan to better understand scope of cancer. We’ve applied for scan but have not heard back yet.

Right now, he seems to have prostatitis from the biopsy and we’ve don’t have a urologist we feel good about seeing. I’m going to try the u of m urology department tomorrow.
