DRIVING (MISS DAISY OR ANYONE ELSE)

I seem to be catching up on some issues so I hope I’m not distrupting anyone’s thoughts.

In September 2017 I decided to stop driving due to the disease and treatment side effects. I was most concerned about taking both morphine and Percocet. I think I might have screwed up this decision. There are times I feel I can’t drive and other times I feel I can.

What did you guys do about driving and what motivated you in making your decision?

I’m driving. If I’m too tired, I ask my husband to drive.

There are other reasons than pain meds to hang up the keys!!

Brain Fog in its worst form (mine) diminished my cognitive abilities and I found myself making very poor decisions (pull out in front of someone, lane changes with someone there, run traffic lights........). No accidents yet but not smart.....might as well drive when drunk or stoned!!!!

So I just do short errands now, I don’t cart the grandkids around and try to let the wife drive most of the time (thats when I need tranquilzers)!

Not an easy call to make at all. It’s just one more way this F*&$ing cancer treatment emasculates you!! But I’m alive!!!

Jimhoy,

I admire you as man with courage to know your limitations and do what's best for you and your family. It takes a masculine mind to make those kind of decisions.

I hope I am manly enough to do the same when I get there.

Thanks,

Jim

I still drive.... and still remember the traffic rules. Red light means stop. Green light means go. Yellow light means go faster.

No longer can I do the driving in the back seat in the dark like I used to when I was younger. And no longer those damn high heel marks on the inside roof.

I bought an immaculate 63 Cadillac fleetwood no post with diamond tuck leather seats in 1979 from a third party. The owner had passed onward and upward and his true name on the title was Frank LoveGod.. at 18 yrs old and 6 ft 3 I could stretch out with company in luxury .. in that back seat .. remember the drive inn movie theaters ? .. auto sex is Romantic ... except in a yugo..

I’ve owned about 50 cars being a car guy... spent a lot , never made a penny in sales. But did have fun in each one . Thanks for the memories.. Peace to you in NYC ...

How about my 1965 Corvette Stingray coupe...Milano Maroon? Stolen twice, recovered once. I was sort of a car guy once.... Now all I want is four doors, air conditioning and infrequent repairs. With Age you gain wisdom.

I still drive and see no reason not to The therapies haven't affected my cognitive abilities or my reflexes at all. My wife does the driving to my VA appointments in Portland (she does most of the talking too - sometimes I have to remind her that I'm the one with the disease), but that's just because I'm not always in the best shape after those appointments.

As far as j-o-h-n's comment goes, the last drive-in movie theater around here closed many years ago and the lupron has removed any capability there anyway.

Best fun as a kid was the drive inn movies ..

I still drive, but not for a few weeks after diagnosis due to too much pain. I also don't drive to/from chemo, as I take something for anxiety ahead of time, and get benadryl in the pretreatment, either of which would put me to sleep on their own.

Still driving. Try to control road rage when granddaughter is in car. I believe I am a little more careful now. Have thought about limping into next meeting with MO and leaving with handicap sticker for car. Was nice when wife had sticker. But don't want to cross that line yet. Do have a medical baseline for utilities. Saves me $10 a month in winter. My license is good for another 4 and a half years. We shall see.

in reply to monte1111

Road rage what’s that? What happens when the granddaughter is out of the car? You’re cracking me up. Get the handiman plates..Don’t want you fighting over a parking spot. I ve had road rage many times prior to dx.. no improvement post dx. Take care monte..

I stopped driving for the same reasons, too many meds with tiredness as a side effect. Figured if I was falling asleep everytime I sat down, it would be better if there wasn't a steering wheel in front of me. Just 1 more of the many challenges.

Sign me up for an atounamous Tesla .. We can just sit in the back and say “ Home James” The danger with driving is only bad drivers. I’ll gladly shut up and be chaufferd ....

In Amsterdam they have the famous statue of the little boy with his finger in the dike that saved the town ..So the story went. Different dike. The other would never let a little boy put a finger in her.

I have enjoyed reading your reparté. Fun stuff. I'm 59 and a life without a car in California is NO life. Granted, I am not on opioids all the time, that could definitely sway my choice to drive and I would definitely put the brakes on driving!

Grew up in N cal. Going back now I hate to drive in cal. We go occasionally to see family . My stress coming back from the 405 to the 10 to my six mile dirt road goes to zero. Cal is land of the car, for sure dude.. hope you got somebody to drive you . What a nightmare without that.. I ve driven over a million miles . I’d gladly get in the back seat if I had that option . Which I don’t.. Take care
