Does anyone have any experience with Maitake Mushrooms?

a friend was at a "talk" and heard that they were good for slowing prostate cancer.

I checked online and there is a lot about it...just curious?

There are a couple of articles in PUB MED

ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/108...

ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/124...

but only in cell cultures.

They are very tasty. I eat them at the local steak house. I have never seen them at the supermarket. Amazon sells them along with a bunch of supplements made with these mushrooms.

There are studies that indicate that there may be cancer fighting benefits to shiitake, turkey tail and a number of other mushrooms. These have been used in many Asian countries for a very long time. I don't believe there are any definitive studies that show they are curative.

However, when I mentioned taking turkey tail and an assortment called "my community" made by Host Defense to my MO, she seemed fine with it. Either she has heard good things, it has no bearing on my treatment or any option is good at this point...Lol. Host Defense is supposed to be the cleanest and highest quality source, if you are not planning on popping mushrooms all day. Check out this video youtube.com/watch?v=mWT09ZD...

As long as it doesn't cause liver failure, I'm in!

Good luck.

Thanks for the video link and info. I'm a Gleason-8 stage-4 PCa for over one year and doing great. Among the supplements I take 1/2 tsp daily, Turkey Tail Extract is one of them: bulksupplements.com/coriolu...

You can also buy it on Amazon and they usually contact you via email to offer you a free sample of another one of their products. The offer works. I now use several of their products and I'm quite pleased with the quality and packaging.

John,

Here's what I wrote 2 years ago:

IMO, turkey tail is more promising:

I order a multi mushroom combo pill from Costco. I might double the recommended dosage. Or i might buy a straight Turkey tail mushroom pill to add to the combo.

Sounds promising as an bonus to boost the efficacy of Lupron and Xtandi.

Thanks Patrick.

I'm currently taking Beta 1,3D Glucan made from Saccharomyces cerevisiae -- Beta Glucan comes from many sources and each one has a different content or is a different strain -- some from yeast, and various mushrooms shiitake, maitake, chaga --- is Turkey tail better or should I add it to the Beta 1,3D Glucan i'm already taking.

I was advised from a friend about Turkey tail mushrooms...google it. I think it and Maitake have the most info about them and seem to be the best. I'd keep doing what I am doing and maybe add a little turkey tail to the mix...LOL. But, "I know nothing"...(said in German accent ala Colonel Shultz)

My husband takes a product by realmushrooms.com called 5 Defenders. It contains Turkey Tail, Reishi, Maitake, Shitake, and Chaga. I buy it at Amazon. But the realmushrooms.com site has a great FAQ. They get their mushrooms from Nammex ( nammex.com )

sounds like the same mix (off my head) that Costco sells. I ordered a bottle and may add a side of straight turkey tail....to beef up the mix....LOL.

Thanks!

As an amateur mycologist, and in hope of slowing cancer progression, I often find and use fresh turkey tail mushrooms like chewing gum. They grow all over the place on decaying wood (parks, back yards, woods, etc in the Pacific NW). I also freeze them and make a tea with them from time to time. I haven't been consistent about use, and nothing's been proven by standardized trials, but my recurrent high-Gleason PC has certainly gone more slo-mo than expected. So... no harm, no foul.

oh...I wish I was in the Pacific Northwest right now...it's 1000 degrees in Ft. Lauderdale. I used to spend every August (the whole month) in Seattle back in my mid to late 30's just to get out of our worst heat! It's so beautiful there...and NOW there would be the added benefit of FREE mushrooms...LOL. I figure with the capsules it will be easy to stay consistent...and I may add cooked ones ...when I can find them (in stores here).

Thanks,

John

Yes, staying consistent makes a lot of sense to me too (even though I haven't).

A guy meets his friend who's got a mushroom in his ear. The guy says to his friend "Why do you have a mushroom in your ear?" Friend replies "Cause I ran out of carrots".

No whining, they're free.

At least this post clued me in that shiitake and turkey tail are mushrooms. I was getting a little nervous. I actually vote for peyote. The role of cactus in cancer should certainly be investigated.

I agree cactus' role in fighting Pca should definitely be pinpointed.

I take beta glucan as well and do believe in the power of mushrooms. The common white in grocery stores has good properties as well. I keep them in my diet.

I use a turkey tail extract from Mushroom Science. It is the same formulation (see the science part on their website) as a drug called Krestin used in Japan. At one time I believe Krestin was the most-prescribed anticancer drug in Japan. There are many papers, most in Japanese. The mechanisms are not fully understood, but it's pretty well documented that cancer patients who take Krestin live longer than those who don't.
