Prostate Biopsy

Hi everyone.

I wasn't sure which community to post to, so I hope this one is correct.

I have had an enlarged prostate for a few years and I've had an MRI and been taking Finasteride over that time.

Recently on my follow up they suggested another MRI as a check. It seems the review is suspicious and they want to do a transperineal template biopsy under a GA as soon as possible.

I am in the UK and have the option of having the biopsy (and any cancer treatment if needed) done privately (through BUPA), but I'm not sure if there is any benefit in doing so. The treatment I presume would be same on the NHS as privately.

I'm very stressed about it at the moment (which is probably typical). Can anyone comment on the benefits of going privately vs the NHS, apart from perhaps waiting times?

Thank you.

I don't know about NHS versus private, but, your comfort with the consultant/doctor who would do the biopsy is important. If private affords you the option to meet and or select your doctor prior to the biopsy, then, IMHO, that might be the better way to go....assuming all else between private and NHS is equal.

If you're uncomfortable with the situation get a second opinion from another doctor it never hurts to have a second opinion

Thanks. I've decide to go privately and have the procedure scheduled now for 13th March. It will be with the same consultant who has a very good reputation.
