"Check your Fish Oil Capsules -- They're very likely to be rancid!"

This was the advice I received from a very sharp and nutrition-oriented internist (MD) with whom I met this week. Among other things, he encouraged me to cut open one of my capsules and just smell it. I did so and WOW -- the odor was overpowering! The oil in the capsules seems clearly rancid, and I've now tossed the remainder. By comparison, my bottle of Carlson's Fish Oil, kept refrigerated since opening, had no hint of odor and seems to be a much better choice.

According to the internist, most if not all fish oil capsules are rancid -- "it's very difficult to encapsulate fish oil without it turning rancid." So my particular brand .is apparently not out of the ordinary.

Based on the above, you just might want to cut one of your fish oil capsules and see if it passes the "smell test". :) Incidentally, I have nothing against fish oil capsules (been taking them regularly) or any personal interest in Carlson's Fish Oil. It happens to be what I have and also what the internist recommends.

I was quite surprised by the result of this simple experiment and thought I'd pass it along to those of you who also include fish oil in your supplement regimens.

Better yet, throw them out - they may be harming you:

While these studies focus on PCa risk, it would seem reasonable to assume that fish oil intake is likely associated negatively with progression for those of us already beyond the risk stage. Do you agree?

If you mean there is higher risk of progression with greater intake, that would be reasonable assumption.

Would that also imply that a lot of fish in ones diet may be harmful to people with advanced PC? What blood test should we ask for next time to determine if our level is too high ?

No - eating fish is very different. Your body takes what it needs and discards the rest. It's hard to OD on a food, the way one can on a supplement. If you eat too much fish, especially fish from higher up the food chain, there is a danger of mercury toxicity. But 2-3 x per week is fine.

Thanks for this post. I tossed mine after performing your "experiment."

Also remember not to drink the water. J-o-h-n revealed that fish fornicate in the water. Best laugh I had in years. Quit drinking water. But still need those ice cubes.

Thanks for the tip Bill. I'm gonna throw out my sour cream, it tastes sour.

So, pardon my ignorance, but does this go for Krill oil as well?

Sorry that I don't know the answer. Perhaps others do. If I had any krill capsules, I'd cut one open and try the same smell test. That should answer the question. :)
