Megadosing Vit D3 to slow down my prostate cancer

See my below history and how D3,K2 (MK-7), Magnesium, and Omega 3 gems (Norwegian Fish Oil, Omega 3 fatty Acids) may be stopping or even regressing my prostate cancer.

In May of 2009 after a sixteen needle biopsy I was diagnosed with prostate cancer. I was 63 years old. The pre-operative pathology report revealed that only five percent of my prostate was cancerous with a pre-operative Gleason score of 6 (3+3). After (nerve sparring) Robotic surgery in August 2009, I was diagnosed with the following: primary staging pT2; Gleason score 7( 3+4); margins clean, seminal vessels clean, lymph nodes clean, 5% of prostate is cancerous.

Below is my PSA history.

6/24/10 .07

9/12/13 <.04

5/12/14 .05

5/7/15 .10

6/16/15 .10 different urologist and lab

9/15/15 .10

12/11/15 .12 started taking D3 (16,000 IU’s per day)

3/16/16 .13

6/16/16 .14 started taking D3 (20,000 IU’s per day)

9/20/16 .13 raised D3 to 30,000 IU’s per day and also taking Vitamin K2 & K1 and Magnesium.

2/8/17 .10

6/12/17 .10 raised D3 to 42,000 IU’s per day and also raised my K2 (MK7,MK4) and Magnesium.

9/19/17 raised D3 to 50 IU’s per day and also raised my K2 (MK7,MK4) and Magnesium. I went to a different type of D3 and start using just k2(MK7).

12/7/17 .13 I am now going back to Carlson Solar D Gems D3 and Life Extension Super K’s and see if that makes a difference. When my PSA went back to .13 I had a bad infection in my stomach area following a triple stomach hernia operations. I was in the hospital for four days on antibiotics. I heard that a bad infection can temporally raise your PSA score.

5/11/18 .12

Since I started taking D3 and subsequently raised the amount, my PSA readings have started to decline. I am also taking fish oil (Omega-3), Vitamin K1 and K2 (MK-7, MK-4). I take Vitamin K2 to make sure that most of my calcium is going into my bones and not my blood. I am also taking magnesium to help keep my blood pressure low and it is essential for D3 absorption into our cells. I have read a lot of articles and three books revealing how vitamin D3 (which is a hormone and eventually turns into a steroid) & vitamin K2 can destroy or slow down slow growing prostate cancer cells. Notice my PSA results during the summer months, starting in May of 2015. The sun helps create vitamin D3 in your body. This winter, I increased my vitamin D3 through supplements because of the lack of sunlight. My latest PSA reading went down .03 to .10 which was the reading I had in May of 2015. I just had some recent blood tests and here are some of my results. Vitamin D 25 Hydroxy (108 ng/mL); Calcium (9.1 mg/dL, well within the range); Cholesterol (166 mg/dL); HDL (62 mg/dL); LDL (87mg/dL); Triglycerides (86 mg/dL). My current blood pressure is around 105 over 70, 56 pulse rate. As you can see, except for the first test all my test results fall with the standard range. The key of mega dosing D3 is to take K2 with it. I take one Super K pill (Life Extension) for ever 10,000 IU's of Vit D3. Each pill contains the following: 1500 mcg of K1, 1000 mcg of K2 (mk-4), 200 mcg of K2 (mk-7). I also take a lot of fish oil (omega 3) and Magnesium supplements. The bottom line is even though my D3 level is 108 ng/mL, the calcium in my blood is normal. There goes the myth of toxicity of having too much calcium going into your blood (calcification of the arteries) with high doses of D3. Remember, you must take K2 (MK-7) along with the D3 to avoid toxicity. It looks like I am getting results. What I am doing may just work with people with low Gleason scores and low volume of prostate cancer. The following books explain what I am doing.

Go to your search engine on your computer (I use Google) and type in the following "vitamin d3 and vitamin k2 duo treating prostate cancer". You will get many websites discussing this topic. Here is one example.

I hope you are testing your liver enzymes because of potential Vitamin D toxicity. There is high level evidence that supplementing it doesn't accomplish anything. There is also evidence that omega-3s are harmful.

Did you see how my psa progressed over the last five years. My urologist doesn't have an answer. Read the books I recommended and then get back to me. I work out everyday with weights and treadmill. I still can bench press 180 pounds. I am 71 and weigh 198 and a 34 in waist. It has been over 9 years that I have been dealing with this cancer. My psa doubling time is around 11years. I get a full physical every year. Twenty minutes in the sun is 20,000 IU's of D3. There are many you tube videos of doctors and professors lecturing on the benefits of D3. My urologist originally stated that my cancer was progressing and I would need that terrible hormone therapy. Now he is confused and thinks I have benign tissue that was left behind that is causing my PSA reading. Remember D3 is a hormone/steroid that affects our cells. Thousands of our cells have D3 receptors. Anyways, it's working for me.

I saw how your PSA is temporarily stalled at about 0.1, which is not unusual after SRT and before mets become large enough to be detectable. As long as your regimen is safe, do whatever makes you happy.

This RCT questions the benefit of Vitamin D3, but doesn't raise safety issues at their once a month dosing:

These suggest that calcium and omega-3 supplements are unsafe for men with prostate cancer:

My salvage radiation was eight years ago.

the unanswered question is whether all sources of calcium are equally risky. the study lumped them all together.

but what if the majority of the calcium intake for some patients was from dairy products?

or what if it was from Ca pills with vit D?

dairy fat may be a bad actor for cancer. so, if most of the calcium was derived from a person's diet including a high intake of dairy products, that would also include a higher dairy fat intake than normal.

and that could have biased the conclusions

Tall_Allen profile image
Tall_Allen in reply to cbgjr

Why risk it, since there is no proven benefit?

"Furthermore, when we modeled simultaneously total calcium intake with total dairy products or lactose intakes, only the association with calcium remained. "

when you are on Xgeva, as I am, Ca + D supplements are necessary.

or so I've been told by several oncologists.

Serum calcium levels should be watched closely while taking it, as hypocalcemia may occur.

Corvettered profile image

Google the pros of taking Vitamin K2(mk-7). You will see that one of its main functions is to direct the calcium in your blood to you bones so that hypocalcaemia won't occur.

Tall_Allen profile image

If it takes calcium out of your blood to put it in your bones, that will create more hypocalcemia (which is based on serum values).

Vitamin K2 MK-7 regulates the extrahepatic movement and uptake of calcium in the body; or, more simply, K2 regulates the distribution of calcium. MK-7 activates the proteins that incorporate calcium into bones (where it is needed) and activates the proteins that bind calcium to prevent deposits in arteries and smooth muscle walls (where it increases cardiovascular risk factors).

Vitamin K2 is an essential cofactor for the activation of proteins belonging to the Gla-protein family, of which one of the most studied is osteocalcin. Osteocalcin plays a role in the integration of calcium into the bone matrix, a function that defines vitamin K2 as essential to bone health.

Vitamin K2 MK-7 is also essential for the activation of matrix Gla-protein (MGP).6 After MGP is activated (in a carboxylation process initiated by vitamin K2), MGP binds free-floating calcium to prevent it from being deposited in vascular smooth muscle cells.7 Without MGP activation, unbound calcium is free for deposit in arteries and vascular smooth muscle walls. In plain language, K2 prevents calcium from being deposited in arteries, making it essential for heart health.

You seem to have bought into all this from Life Extensions or similar site without benefit of any clinical trials. A dangerous practice.

I retired as a Narcotic's Detective from the Los Angele Police Department. In 2003 I was diagnosed with Tonsil cancer that spread to my lymph nodes in my neck area. In 2009 I was diagnosed with prostate cancer. I survived all that and you tell me it is a dangerous practice believing Vitamin K2 is beneficial to my body. That's laughable.

I'll stick with info provided by clinical trials rather than random test tube results from the internet.

i would watch taking high levels of vit d3 --it can cause kidney damage..fred

not exactly sure--but i have seen people taking over 20,000 mg per day start to get vitd3 toxic after having been on it for 25 to 30 days--while others had no issue with this high dosage --high dosage will cause calcium to sky rocket also..

I had a friend with MS who was advised to take 100,000 daily doses of vit D and it seemed to pull here out of some severe debilitation. I have no idea how long she took it or continued as she moved away and we haven’t kept in touch.

I have been using the COMB diet since 2013 to fend off Osteopoosis with great success--its very similiar to your D3 regimen but uses much less D3 and includes Strontium. I've been on ADT for over 11 years and Psa is curently 0.01. Details on my Blog

I think Lifting weights is a major reason my bones are in good shape

A question on High D3 levels-- If we get 20,000 to 40,000 D3 units from normal sun then people who get this and more from sun most days of their lives don't seem to have an overdose problem???

Corvettered profile image

I take 200 mcg of K2(mk-7) for every 10,000 IU's of D3. The k2 directs the calcium to the bones and away from the arteries. I also take magnesium to help my cells absorb the D3. I take fish oil (omega -3's) to help absorb the D3 into my blood. My calcium levels are always normal. Right now I am taking 40,000 IU's a day. my D3 level is 113 ng/mL. I feel great and stronger. Good luck to everyone!

Congratulations on keeping PSA low for so long. On recommendation of a doctor I have been on D3 for the last 10 years. My serum D went from 40 to 80. Thanks for the information on vitamin K.

It's interesting to see the discussion of D we get from the sun. In actuality, it is highly variable with latitude, time of year, time of day, cloud cover, etc. My D has been around 80 for years because I bought a tanning bed years ago. I get exactly the same amount of D year round. They are not that expensive. Just food for thought.

I have read articles like this for years and I find them misleading. You think they are saying indoor tanning is worse than the sun ("Indoor tanning is so dangerous that") but they do not offer any proof. In fact, they say other things ("UV rays, whether they come from indoor tanning or the sun," and "UV rays damage skin no matter where they come from"). It turns out they are not anti-indoor tanning, they are anti-UV which is why there is an epidemic of D shortage in the U.S. As for cancer, it is normally linked to over-exposure (far more likely with the sun than a tanning bed. Also, the sun's rays include UVA, UVB AND UVC (due to thinning of the ozone layer) with UVC being the most dangerous. Most tanning beds including mine have no UVC.

To red Corvette, I have only one question for you..... Why the hell would you move from sunny California to snowy Upstate New York?

Good Luck and Good Health.

I am from upstate New York and moved to California in 1972. I got a job with U.S Secret Service as a special agent out of the Los Angeles Field Office. I was with President Carter for a while and then got married. The traveling wasn't great for married life so I resigned and got hired by LAPD and retired there. We moved back to New York State in 2012. I guess I went back to my roots.
