Thank you so much for responding. I don’t know much about the forum other than tidbits that Neal had told me about. I don’t know how to post to it and don’t know if I can find his login or password. If you want to post about his passing, please do so.

Yes, Neal and I have one son and he is very aware of the hereditary aspects of this terrible disease.

As you may know in 2011 he had bone mets to his spine resulting in a spinal cord compression. Although confined to a wheel chair for several months, he was able to walk again and we spent the last seven years enjoying life and traveling. He rarely complained of pain and when he did it was because of an ankle and knee problem.

We traveled from California to Chiang Mai on January 11, 2018 hoping to stay in Southeast Asia until March 21. We were also going to go to Vietnam. He wasn’t doing well most of the time. He saw doctors at a Chiang Mai hospital who recommended we come home and we did so on February 15. Their scans revealed pleural effusion as well as tumors in the lungs.

On February 22 he was told the cancer had taken an even more aggressive turn. In addition to the pleural effusion, he also had pericardial effusion (heart). This is extremely rare for prostate cancer. He was told on February 28 that he also had severe aorta valve stenosis (which may or may not have been caused by radiation or could just be aging). Neal had never had any heart issues prior to this...

That day, February 28, he decided he would have no chemo and instead do palliative care (to be followed by hospice) because of his grave condition. The doctors gave him month(s) to a year. The eternal optimist, Neal had hoped for a year and wanted to work on his photos and to spend time with the family.

On the evening of February 28, his condition deteriorated so badly that by the following morning, March 1, he was bedridden and under hospice care at home. He died just eleven days later.

It sounds like you have lots of memories of your time together that you can cherish. So glad you were able to spend so much time together traveling. Thank you for sharing your story with us

Neal was quite a PCa warrior. May he Rest In Peace.

Our sincerest condolences,

James

Mg heart goes out to you. This is every bit a wife's cancer, as well. Some days I feel it may kill me first. You have a special place in heaven, beside him in his heart. Thank you for being there and for loving him. I've been a RN 41 years now. Not every man is as fortunate as our men, to have a woman who will stand by their side. It is an honor to be there but I know the fear and the courage it requires. You are every bit the warrior that he has been. Thank you for being so strong. May God wrap his loving arms around you and bring comfort to you and your son.

Yvonne, I am so deeply saddened to hear of Neals passing. He and I wrote several times during my husbands illness because he had spinal cord compression and was paralyzed prior to his death. I appreciated his optimism and thoughtful suggestions. I don't often get on this site any more as it is still difficult even after a year and half since losing him. Neal and I even talked about religion and his views a bit. He even talked about you, in such loving ways. He was a very interesting and strong man and I am glad we were able to share much to help each other. I had no idea Neal had gotten so ill but I am glad to have gotten to know him just a tiny bit. The loss of your spouse is something no one can understand until they have been through it. I know how difficult it will be for you so do reach to your family and friends even if you don't feel like it.. as this is so necessary. I will keep you in my prayers.

Neal asked where I lived, but being on the east coast we could not get together. I loved reading about his travels. I told my wife today, he was a true fighter.

May you have peace.

God Bless, Rich

I am very saddened to hear of Neal's passing. I didn't have much direct communication with him, but I agree with everything NALAKRATS said he did have a joy for life that we can all learn from. This disease takes so much from us, it has taken another kind soul. May he rest in peace.

Yvonne, Neal and I shared a few emails over the years and then while he was in Thailand we shared a few more emails. We were looking forward for the four of us to get together in March when you were to return. What came through his writing was his compassion, his curiosity, his warmth, and how proud he was to be with you... There are no words .... I am so sorry...
