Does anyone eat ground flaxseed and take turmeric and/or soy isoflavones for their prostate cancer? If so, has it helped to lower psa and reduce symptoms? Mark58

I take curcumin -- an extract from turmeric. I cannot say for certain what it has done for me; after all, I am an uncontrolled experiment. However, I am still responding to hormonal treatment after 12 years, and think that might in part be due to my curcumin.

Thanks! That is great news!

Brent, How much curcumin do you take daily? Also, do you take it with black pepper and olive oil for better absorption? What brand? Thanks, Mark58

Turmeric. I take 1 capsule (400mg) of Life Extension Super Biocurumin. Supposedly, this has higher bioavailability with the use of bioperine (pepper.) Not sure how this works, but the prostate-only medical oncologist that I saw last Monday thought this was a good product and that 1 capsule was a good daily dose for me. Note that I also add turmeric powder to stews, chilis, .etc, but this is more a random things than done on a daily basis.

Soy Isoflavones. I eat tofu and soy vege burgers which I assume have isoflavones. I partly do this to reduce the amount of meat that I eat. I read that some feel soy is bad for PCa, but the docs I see don't agree.

Flax. I don't use based on recommendations in Snuffy Myer's New Prostate Cancer Nutrition book. He is another PCa-only medical oncologist. I've read that other experts recommend flax.

You can drive yourself nuts trying to figure out what to eat based on all the info out there. I like Mark Moyad's advice presented at the PCRI conference which was basically to eat a heart-healthy diet. You can also google UC San Francisco as they have a fairly detailed write-up on PCa and diet.

Regarding has it helped me. I have no way of knowing. My PSA doubling time has lengthened, but I don't know for sure why. Personally, I believe my increased exercise has been a factor. It's really hard to know the answer of what truly is beneficial without a clinical trial.

Best wishes.

Thank you!

You are welcome. One correction, the above should have indicated that Super BioCurcumin does not add bioperine, but increases bioavailability by some other means.

I take turmeric in capsule form. I also take green tea extract by capsule. I started that when I had BPH years ago. Wonder if green tea is helpful for PCa. I get my supplements from Vitacost.

Stay away from flaxseed. I have read a few sources that say it is bad for Pca.

I have read that flax oil promotes prostate cancer but raw ground flax seed slows it down. Go figure. I have also heard soy is good and bad for prostate cancer.

I take both. Can not comment on effect on PSA as I Hadmy prostate removed last April and my measured PSA is <0.1. Note, I have read that while flax seed (ground) is good for prostate cancer flax oil can promote cancer growth.
