I have been taking Adderall for 7 years and the first 5 years it was 40mg a day. For the last 2 years it's been 50mg a day.
About 2 months ago my doctor moved to a higher-paying postition. He had me on 50mg of Adderall a day. For 2 years that had been working great. However, the new doctor will only do 40mg a day. They keep telling me there is no evidence that 50mg more effective than 40mg. He will not listen to me his patient.
I am wondering what I should do. They keep telling me my body hasn't adjusted to the new prescription amount.

If possible, try to find another doctor who’s willing to work with you! Accurate dosing is critical for a successful Treatment Plan. I don’t know why there isn’t a test for the right amount of stimulant medication for ADDers! Also, I wish we could make the field of psychiatry more accountable to their patients! Good luck and God bless! 🙏
It is possible that I could make an appointment with another doctor. The only real issue is it worked best with 50MG a day and they just won’t listen to me. Instead, they tell me there is no proof that 50MG is the best dosage.
If it helps, there's 50mg dose with Mydayis, its made the same as Adderall but extended triple release, so there is established FDA dosing for 50mg for full day coverage. If you ask the doctor saying you need full day coverage but can't get Mydayis due to insurance issues then you need the off-label Rx of 50mg
question is when are you taking it? I went from 30 mg 8am & noon..,sleeping pills at night..never felt relief....it's 6 days now taking 30 mg 8am & 30mg at 8PM and last nite I slept deeper and beeter in years!! Speed at night works for this brain...good luck
I can totally relate to your situation and thought process. I’ve experienced similar problems with medication dosing too. And because of that, I’ve lost prescribers. If you’d like to discuss in more detail email…jim.delmonaco@gmail.com
60 mg is actually the fda max. All I can say is that it sounds like you will have to find a new doctor. A lot of them are extremely stubborn on this and don't tailor to the individual patient. Perhaps try finding a doctor that specializes specifically on ADHD, not just general psychiatry.
40 is the FDA max for ADHD, 60 is the max for Narcolepsy. But that is per day. Doesn't break it down as to all at once or over 2 or 3 doses. Which makes it somewhat useless.
Plus the FDA does leave room for the therapist to prescribe the amount they believe to be therapeutic to the patient. Its a guide, but not a hard and fast rule. But yeah, heard about too many shrinks who don't understand context when they see those boiler plate statements on dosing.
Hi. I've been there. It amount of ADHD Rx changes over time. I was taking (2) 20mg IR a day. Now I'm taking (2) 30mg IR a day. Which for me only lasts 3-4 hours, The XR release lasts for 5 to 6 hours (All of this is in Generic form. Would it work better or get a longer effect with NAME BRAND Adderall. Unkown. And I don't want o fight the in surname companies again. When you said 'They tell me there is no proof that 50MG is the best dosage.' From all I've read, when it comes to dosage, it's ALL trial and error. Ask him to give you 50mg and if it's too much, you can break them in half. Most of us know that if you take too much Rx, it's going to give you an unpleasant experience. For me, I'm on 'edge" and my anxiety sky rockets. Not a good feeling. Ask him where he's gotten the info that 50mg is just as effective as 40mg.
Did he actually read it in some medical journal? Or did he just pull it out of his As#?
Might be too late to be helpful but, Name brand is usually, but not always, your best bet. Name brand usually uses the highest quality ingredients which can make a huge difference. I have seen people call out specific brand of XR as being terrible. You can search online and find out which ones. Always ask your pharmacy what brand the generic is. Find out which generics to avoid. If they don't have a good one, ask for your script back and go somewhere else. Unless they are willing to order a good brand. Some pharmacies get what they get from their wholesaler and are stuck with it. Doctor can write specific brands on the script too so they would have to order it if they could. Also, check what you are eating or other supplements you are taking. They can affect your meds too. Like if your urine is more acidic it will eliminate the meds more instead of reabsorbing them. Amphetamines are a weak base and more basic is better for absorption and retaining the medication. If I drink a can of soda for lunch, my meds wear off faster. But it isn't' always the case of eat/drink acidic food the result is acidic gut, blood, urine etc. Some acids cause more basic conditions while some just make things more acidic and vice versa with basic stuff. Have to do some research that matches your habits. And damn cat, what they hell have I been feeding you? You stunk up the whole house with that one! Nasty!
I would have told your doctor that it is no more effective at 50 than 40 for people who meet their therapeutic level at 40 or below. Once you reach your optimal therapeutic level, adding more on has decreasing benefit and at a certain point, no more at all. I hope you dumped the doc and gave him a bad review online. Doesn't seem to have the capacity to understand context when reading things.
