Has anyone ever felt anxious that the medication won't work?

I'm newly diagnosed at 54. I have always felt lazy, unmotivated, immature and sometimes not nice. I forget things that people have told me and have questioned whether or not they really did tell me. Anyway, today is the first day of taking medication (vyvanse) and I am anxious that it won't work because my diagnoses is wrong and I really am just lazy and so on.

Hey. I’m 36 and was diagnosed a few months back and have been prescribed Elvanse (the UK name for Vyvanse). The medication itself - try not to overthink the effects in the first couple of weeks. At first for me I felt the ‘up’ and then the slight moody crash in the afternoon. Both of these went away after a while of taking - this is good. With Vyvanse it isn’t meant to be as noticeable uptake like other medications. You may feel better in yourself mood wise, but what you should keep an eye on is the functions you have and if they have improved mainly. Apart from that, I question myself whether I have it and look for concrete answers like someone’s going to get inside my brain and tell me definitively. It’s got to the point I’m winding myself up about it and it isn’t helping. I have to trust my psychologist and his diagnosis. Overthinking doesn’t help one bit and could create more issues for you. Take your time with it and talk to your specialist. As I’m writing this it’s like giving myself advice that someone should be telling me ha. Quite therapeutic!

Thank you for taking the time to respond. You’re right to say don’t over think it. I actually had a good day, felt calm and not bothered by little things. Even though I found myself going off the focus train I was able to put myself back on.

I'm in much the same position as yourself and the other responders. Recently diagnosed, still figuring out the medication along with everything else that comes with a diagnosis. Be kind to yourself and patient with the process.

I can relate. I was diagnosed at 29 and medication has been life changing (in a positive way). I started on the lowest dose of Concerta and slowly increased to the max dose. It really worked but after taking it for about a year... it wasn’t lasting throughout the day. By 1 I was again unfocused and unproductive. I have recently been changed to Vyvanse, 30mg to start. At first I was able to notice the difference, but I am a month in (I have my appointment tomorrow) and I KNOW that I need an increase because it is not as effective as the highest dose of Concerta. Long story short, medication adjustments are inevitable but as long as you are under the care of an understanding and trustworthy doctor or psychiatrist the increase process isn’t too much of a hassle. Mine is so supportive and trusts my feedback when I say I don’t feel it’s being effective enough. Hope this helps and good luck on your journey!

Hi! I'm turning 60 soon. Both my children have adhd. I was recently diagnosed by my kids and online. Was shocked. Have similar feelings as you. I can't find a psychiatrist! It was hard to reach out for help. Been turned down by 4 now. Maybe I'm just making this up? Hard to keep trying for help when I don't believe it's TRUE. Good for you in getting well! Meds improved the lives of my kids!

I’m so sorry to hear that you’re having a hard time getting help. Don’t give up, if your children see it then it’s likely true. Take care of yourself 😀
