I need some serious help finding my adhd medication!

I was diagnosed with adhd around 2011. After 5 years of experimenting with countless medications, my dr finally found that adderall worked wonders. I've been taking it ever since. 4 years ago we moved and now I can't find a dr to prescribe me the only thing that has ever worked for me. Adderall. I need some serious help!

Hello Dakotakane,

Have you tried requesting a release of information from your former physician that outlines your diagnosis and Adderall treatment? If not, I'd start by calling your previous physician's office and explain your situation to them. They should be able to produce a medical record that outlines the medications they tried and what finally worked for you.

Once you know what documentation exists that supports your need, call a couple of new practices in your area and explain your history and offer to have the records transferred to them. You should be able to find someone that's willing to resume your treatment.

If that doesn't work, you may have to pursue a referral for psychotropic medication management. How you get to the point will vary greatly based upon your history, type of insurance you carry, and what resources are available in your area.

In these past 4 years, yes I've tried these suggestions. I did find a PCP that continued my meds for a few months then insisted that I find a psychiatrist to continue my meds. Now I feel like I have to start all over again.

Hi Dakotakane,

Is there a particular barrier for seeing a psychiatrist? Have you spoke with any? What about nurses that focus on psychiatric medicine? They may be more accessible in terms of availability and cost than a psychiatrist.

Here's a link that describes the type of provider I'm referring to:

I see an advanced registered nurse practitioner (ARNP) for my medication and she's been great.

Hi!

Any medication you will take will aim to increase your dopamine levels, which is a precursor of adrenaline. The mediation that you will be prescribed will usually be a dosage taken 2-3 times a day with a gap of 4-6 hours.

Capsules have different mg ranging from 5 mg to 30 mg capsules. But the daily prescribed dose is 30 mg. Now it depends on you if you are to be given more or not. However, expect a loss of appetite, insomnia, faint abdominal pains, and fever-related symptoms.

Also, know that Adderall is under a schedule II drug by the FDA. Reasons that it can be either effectively used or abused. You may not worry, but awareness is important. Has to be closely monitored as far as doses are concerned, or else the amphetamines in the medication can lead to anxiety disorders or even sexual dysfunction. Amphetamines can be have an earlier onset of "crashing".

Other drugs are there too, but Adderall has higher potency and thus can lead to dependency naturally.

I'm actually looking for something else because I think I've got so used to Adderall, that maybe it doesn't work anymore because I also take 5 hour energy drinks too, lol
