adhd suffering

hi I'm 22 years old I'm new here. I was diagnosed with adhd in nov/15/2017 on my birthday I'm a recovering addict and it all made sense to me when I knew about adhd I felt like I was born again because it explained all the situations I experienced!

I'm still suffering in every area in my life in the daily basis! I went to college three times after high school but I dropped out every single time and I think my parents is the one to blame because they got me into school when I had alcohol problem they never paid attention to that! now I don't live with them anymore and I'm so grateful for that my father has adhd and my mother has it as well but they don't believe in it and they refuse to seek treatment for it! I grew up in a very stressful environment my dad was always frustrated and lowering my self esteem down and as a child I used self reflection I thought I'm not good enough or there's something wrong with me.

I started nurofeedback natural treatment four months ago I started nurofeedback seassions and supplements most of the suggested supplements made me feel worse like 5-htp supposed to be anti-depressant but it made me feel more depressed!

the nurofeedback seassions helped me be more focused but I had a problem that when I'm more focused I'm more anxious ( I have a bad anxiety problems as well) I told my therapist that do the seassions to me that but she really didn't help.

I started reading healing add book by dr.amen book and he described different types of adhd and that one treatment don't fit all types. that made sense to me that I have over focused type 3 adhd and with this type when they are more focused they are more anxious.

I want to go back to school so bad before I get older and I know times waits for no one. two days ago I went to do the placement test in college I went to the testing room and there we people sitting next to me I couldn't focus on the test all my focus was on the people even though I know that if there were no people in the room and I wasn't anxious I could get a good score I knew almost a lot of answers but I could not handle my stress and anxiety feeling so I walked out of the college I felt like a failure but people remember when things like that happen do not blame yourself put your blame on anything but yourself. and you have to understand your adhd because if you don't no body will.

now I'm gonna start taking meds for adhd for the first time in my life I'm not a big fan of meds but sometimes they're a life saving ill look for natural treatment after I finish the first semester in college!

I would applicate any tips on how to deal with adhd or any helpful information that would benefit what I'm going through! and I'm here to help as well!

Hi lonerwolf, I would advice you to stop the neurofeedback and the supplements. Unfortunately there are people that convince people with serious conditions like ADHD that they can cure us with all kinds of nonsense. They are the modern day snake oil salesman. I think it would be good for you to seek out a psychiatrist and get valuation for ADHD. Medication is what works best for this condition.

Google "SPECT imaging". You get that done--either you have ADHD, or you don't. The image results are irrefutable. What you got to say now Mom and Dad?

I agree with Ellapony...medication will most likely be the most effective treatment.

i know for a fact that i have adhd, i did not say that I'm wondering if i have adhd!? so the brain spect scan is not gonna help with anything.

medication definitely not the answer as dr.amen said in his book treating adhd natural treatment is long lasting as have the same effects as medications.

so it was nice of you to comment but if you cant help with useful information's keep it rolling.

Sorry if I had offended you. I wasn't trying to be condescending. Rather I am quite sure you know you have ADHD , but isn't modern science convincing enough to your parents the ADHD is real? That was my point--that's all. I don't think what they did to you was right. I don't think when anyone does that to a person with ADHD is right.

Supplements do help--I take some. However (and I can only speak for myself here), the medications are the only treatment that provides enough stimulant for my daily needs to function.

Dr. Amen's material is very good--I myself was put on a very specific supplement plan.

Hey, I was diagnosed at age 31. I totally understand your wanting to avoid medication. What I decided eventually is that to me supplements and medications seemed to both be things you put into your body that interact with your biochemical system. Even foods can do that. It took me lots of trial and error to find the right combination of things to take that worked for me - in the end it was Adderall XR (I can’t even take the regular short acting adderall). But the first time I tried Adderall XR I sat on my couch and cried, realizing that I suddenly felt “like me” and totally in control in a way I hadn’t in decades. I don’t take it every day. I love that I have a tool that I take only on days when I think I want it (for focus, to think more linearly, sit still, or even just be more detail oriented). Now ADHD feels like a superpower... it’s a skill set of being an energized and creative abstract thinker. I feel lucky to have the choice of which qualities I might need - kind of like when you want to be more awake and you grab a cup of coffee! While it took me a long time to come to terms with trying medications and a while to find the right one - and the right dose - it was such an amazing learning experience that taught me so much about myself. I highly recommend that if something isn’t working you consider moving on and trying more things. There are so many options out there don’t waste years like I did!

Good luck! It might take time to find the best thing for you, but just find an MD you trust and never give up! Also, I believe schools will often give accommodations to people who have learning disabilities? Talk to your doctor and see if maybe they know more about whether you might qualify for extra time, a quiet room, etc! Just stay hopeful, you can do this!
