My 13 year old daughter has been taking roaccutane for 3 months 1 month 30mg and 2months 60mg. She’s was on dyxocline Doxycycline for the previous 6 months that caused severe nausea. She is still suffering from nausea and stomach pain. Any advice greatly appreciated

HiI am surprised by the high doses people are taking, especially children .

Dosage is dependent on a person’s weight and the severity of the acne. However, for example, a 50 kg, 14 year old should be on 5mg a day for 6 months to 2 years(until the skin clears). The low dose means less side effects and the success of the treatment according to the research does not improve significantly with a large increase in dose.

She needs to find a routine that works for her. It may be that taking it at a different time of day, empty stomach, just before bed etc may help? I can’t remember the conditions of when to take it but my only suggestion is change the routine that is making her feeling ill.

Roaccutane is to be taken with food, not on an empty stomach.

When I stopped doxycycline my vomiting and nausea stopped within a week as it should. It may be worth a trip to the doctors and blood tests to see if anything else could be causing this as the same symptoms have stayed despite a change in medication?
