Has anyone had any benefit from Aripiprazole for combined type ADHD?

I'm currently taking Concerta 36mg XR but feel like it's not really working that well anymore. I've been told that Aripiprazole is sometimes used off-label for ADHD and wondering whether to discuss with my doctor to switch to this?

Any suggestions or advice or experience would be greatly appreciated :)

Hi jtsh1995

Yes I was on Aripiprazole as its used for paranoid.its also used for bipolar.

This levels the mood swings out.

It worked wonderful for paranoia.

I will tel you that it can slow you down a little and you may want to ask for another med to calm the side affects.

Tight jaw dry mouth.

About ten o’clock in the morning my brain wound do the most bizarre thing.like swapping sides for about 15 mins and it was horrible as it was like having a mini break down and it would be difficult to speak let alone think.

Ive not heard of it being used for the whole of adhd.

Also it can cause qt problems with the heart

Hi Tiggerakafidgity - thanks for your reply :)

I may look into it - I have been on it before but not for ADHD. I think it might help level me out a bit because at the moment I'm a bit up, down, up, down!

I did get some tardive dyskinesia on it though so might be worth talking to my doctor about it. :)

Why don’t you try concerta XL I think that’s the longer acting one.i can’t remember but I think 36mg is quiet low.

I used it and it didn’t work to well as when I got to the maximum dosage it would feel as though my brain was burning hot

I'm on the modified release already but feel like it wears off after about 4 hours.. it was great at first but I think it's just losing it's effectiveness :(

Lixdexaphetamin I started last September and it took a few months to get the high does of Ritalin out of my body.

The beauty of this new med is it last all day and you Dont crash at the end of the day.you also don’t wake up with tight jaw etc before getting to your adhd meds.

OK that's another thing I can talk to my GP about then :)

Is it as energising as Ritalin or is it just for concentration etc?

Its completely different as its an amphetamine

Basically you find it strange at first because with Ritalin I used to have 100mg a day which would give me just the slight buzz to get going.

This one actually does give you the get up and go but in a more level way.

Its not you supercar buzz like Ritalin then hits the red line and then you have no more gears to go up.

Its more like your car that has a 12 cylinder massive amounts of torque kinda med.

So you just get on with it and when ppl are tiring at the end of the day you can carry on as you can learn to use the meds in such away to pace your self if you get me.

Its like a Duracell battery.just goes on and on.

You may not like it at first because it actually keeps you pretty level.so no spikes or falling of a cliff when you get home feeling.

It takes a while to adjust.you start to focus better as your more level and your pace of the day is more level.

You may get with drawl from coming of concerta and going straight on to the new meds.

But after being on Ritalin for 7 yrs it wasn’t actually to bad to be honest.

It took about 2 months to stop feeling the effects of Ritalin.
