My 15yo daughters psychiatrist very recently switched her from Guanfacine 1mg ER to Guanfacine Immediate release. He instructed that we split and even quarter the pills and dose it throughout the day.
The extended release worked and was very helpful for abt 1.5 years until it seemed to be making her moody with internalizing behavior. The hope is that lowering the lowest prescribed dose and controlling the release time will lessen her somewhat intense demeanor.
Finally, I’m just curious to hear anyone else’s experiences with using lower than the 1mg dosage of Guanfacine immediate release?

Good morning! My son was on Guanfacine 1MG ER for about 2 years and we just weaned him off of it in mid-June, so he is only on 10mg Adderall ER now. Guanfacine didn't do that much for him once he started stimulants, which is why we took him off of it. We noticed that he became constipated from Guanfacine, but no other side effects besides that.
Guanfacine has been a wonderful addition for us. We have mood swings periodically but have not changed the medication. We try not to do anything that we have to give during school hours. They have always objected to being singled out at school for nurse's office.
We needed a smaller dose than 1 mg in the ER form. We found the immediate release to be more sedating and had to go back to the ER. Now we take half of an extended release pill- better but not perfect.
