Hiya

My son been 30mg elvanse for nearly 6 months after Ritalin no longer worked but lately he won’t eat at all when it is in his system. The medication works great for his adhd even know I do think he more anxious on it. Just wondering if anyone else has been in situation and what did you do?

My son was like that on Ritalin/Concerta, he got so thin and had no interest in food at all and I was really worried about him. After 6 years of being on tablets he decided himself that this summer he wanted to stop taking them (he is now 12). Over the summer he gained weight and is eating everything in sight and seems so much happier. He does have twice weekly visits to Psychologists that work with him and school. It's far from perfect and at times very trying (behaviour wise) but I would much rather he be happy and healthy.

Same. On Vyvanse and zero appetite when he takes it. Son is now 13, and believe me - the appitite will take over when he reaches puberty. Before that we did a lot of protein drinks. We also were able to give med breaks on weekends and that allowed him to catch up on eating.

Thanks we tryed a medication break this weekend and it works but he was awful last on the Monday when he had his tablet again, I am wondering if the dose might be too high as he not his bubbly self on them. What dose was your son on? How is he now as a teenage I am so worried about the future for him x

My son is always much more upbeat off the meds. He's not mean per se on them, just more fun without. We are now on 40 mg Vyvanse. We had to do a major shift when he hit puberty last year. Wrecks havoc on their system. You just need to stay close to the doc and try whatever works.

What dose was he on before that? Does he have friends? What was hitting puberty’s like? X

I have the same problem. My son is almost thirteen and he takes 2 36mg pills every morning before school. The problem is when he's not on his medicine, he acts pretty crazy. He's really wild and he does not listen at all. He does things he knows he's not supposed to do, he doesn't care and he's just a huge jerk. For me, as bad as it seems, I have to give him his meds so he'll calm down, behave and so I can have a peace of mind. It sucks A***** and believe me, if my son didn't act this way, I wouldn't give him 2 on the weekends. I can't even take him anywhere without his meds because he acts so erractic . It's embarrassing. I feel ya.

Hi, my son is on Ritalin quick release at 5 p.m. I make sure that he eats by 6 p.m. Otherwise he has no appetite and will not eat anything until the next morning. Try to feed your son before giving the medication. It does not have to be a full meal and can be smaller snacks with protein and carbs (veggie & dip, pizza bites, popcorn & nuts, fruit smoothies with protein powder, toast with peanut butter). As long as he is getting a multi-vitamin and something nourishing, he will be alright.
