ADHD and cold medication

I just wanted to post this message to warn everyone to please read the labels on cough and cold medication before giving it to your child if they also take certain medications for ADHD.

We are heading to the season where our kids need this type of medication so please be careful and read the labels. There are interactions with these 2 types of medications and we have to be carefully.

If you have questions, please speak to a pharmacist before giving it to your child.

The label will warn you before (on the cold medication) giving it. For example there is a interaction between cough suppressant dextromethorphan and Ritalin. So I had to give him Sudafed instead. The Pharmacist said he could get Serotonin Syndrome.

Just read the labels first..

Thank you so much for taking the time to post this, in the past I just grabbed anything, now I am extra careful. I will also talk to our son's doctor about when he is really sick with a bad cough what we should do.

My son has allergies different times of the year and I noticed the last time I gave him Clartin that it made his Concerta inefficient. I started receiving calls from the school asking me if he had taken his meds. I stopped the Clartin and everything went back to normal. He is normally pretty healthy but now that I see this I pray he stays well.

I was really surprised about the interactions that is why I am sharing it with the group. You can alway speak to a Pharmacist and they can guide you as to what is best. Stay healthy!
