Highschool anxiety

Hello!

My son is about to start grade 10.

He has ADD. He has never been officially diagnosed but through reading and observation I strongly believe that is his diagnosis.

Along with his ADD he struggles with intense anxiety. I have to often reassure him and he’s afraid of change in routine.

He is so anxious about school starting next week and would love for us to say he doesn’t have to go!

I’m so tired of the pushing and prodding . And him coming home all uptight!

Yes, he is on medication. Presently he is on Wellbutrin and Concerta. I’m hoping to have him referred to see a paediatric psychiatrist this fall to get a proper diagnosis!

Help!

Thank-you for reaching out to the group. I am so sorry you are going through this with your son. I also want to say that in my opinion ( I am no doctor) but I do not believe he is on the right medication (or dose) if he is that nervous about school then something is not right. I also can't say enough about what a great help a pediatric psychiatrist has been for us. Seeing this Specialist with give you a second opinion about his medication.

I really also recommend you consider (if you have not already) gotten your son in with a counselor so he can have someone other than yourself to help him deal with these issues he is struggling with and helps you learn ways to deal with the issues he is having.

No matter what you do, I just want to give you a big hug for all that you constantly struggle with that is so hard to deal with.

We are here for you when you need us, let us know how the appt. goes and hope things get better. He needs to feel better about school or something has to change.

My 13 year old grandson also suffers from severe anxiety. He is on Wellbutrin, intuniv, and Seroquel. Before school started he was a nervous wreck. He goes to a behavioral counselor to help him deal with his anxiety. Once school started he found out he liked his teachers and a couple of his classes and now things have settled down.

His counselor told him Imagining the worst is sometimes more scary than the actual thing itself.
