ADHD and Personal Space

My 10 year old daughter was recently diagnosed with ADHD. She has been diagnosed with hyperactivity, impulsivity, problems socializing and the big one right now that I'm trying to work with is teaching her personal space. Does anybody have suggestions on how to tackle this piece of her diagnosis? I'd appreciate any ideas/suggestions.

Totally understand your situation! My 10 year old is really struggling with this too. I’ve been able to explain to her that everyone has a “bubble” and everyone needs to have space and so we can’t “pop anyone’s bubble.” It’s definitely a work in progress, but I think explaining it to her in this simple way will help her understand!

Definitely not alone! I feel like half of my 10 year olds “quirks” are just her things... and I’m afraid to ask if it’s normal in fear that other parents judge!

We use the personal bubble idea as well as arms length. Another great visual is to use licorice and have each family member demonstrate how many pieces of licorice they need as their personal bubble. The reason this is a great demonstration is because some kids with ADHD will only choose one piece of licorice. Their personal bubble of space is very small which is why they don't understand the concept of "personal space." They are comfortable getting in very close.

My youngest son is a one licorice kid. My second youngest has a more fluid concept of personal space and doesn't like it when others get in to his space, but has no problem invading theirs.

It takes time to teach kids with ADHD to be respectful of personal space, like years. But it's totally possible.

Welcome to the group... this first phase is a bit overwhelming..

Here is a great idea.. get a hola hoop and have her hold it whole looking at you whole she stands in it, under her arms. This shows her how much room she needs to leave. Or she can be in the middle even.
