My son was a little older at diagnosis, age 7, but he really liked the book "Cory Stories". He asked me to read him the book every day for a few weeks. It is for hyperactive type adhd.

I work in children’s services for the public library, so I’ve definitely been trying to keep my eye open for good books for my son (age 6 with ADHD & Tourette). So far we haven’t read any with him, as I don’t want diagnostic labels in his head until he’s a bit more mature. But we do talk a lot about symptoms - being distracted at school, explaining his tics, etc.

I’ll start a more serious search & let you know what I find. I’m currently reading Baxter Bunny (something about his buzz - I’ll try to look up the exact title later.) It explains some, but mostly focuses on teaching kids mindfulness to curb hyperactivity / impulsivity. It’s cute, though I haven’t shared it with my son yet.

I will add, there are quite a few children’s books with characters (or the author) with ADHD. They are more entertaining than informative, but they might be good to help your child find some who can relate when you feel they are mature enough for the material.

Jack Gantos & Henry Winkler both have children’s books series with Characters with ADHD. Dav Pilkey (very popular children’s author - Captain Underpants) even has a character named 80-HD (there’s a recent interview in People with him about dealing with ADHD, and how he drew up his most successful characters while in trouble at school, as his teachers didn’t know how to handle how ADHD.) I believe the main characters in Percy Jackson also have ADHD, as the author, Rick Riordan, has a child diagnosed with it - so he kinda wrote these books for his kid. Semi-related, Tom Angleberger (Origami Yoda) is also very public about his Aspbergers diagnosis.

Sorry for the verbal diarrhea- this is what happens when you ask a Library person a book question! Lol!
