Did you ever notice that your child needs to be doing 2 things at one time? Homework and listen to music? Read and figget spinner. He must always have two things going at the same time.

Do you have any examples?

Or is it just my child?

Love it! I am sure if you asked him he would say it was a "good use of his time"...

Lol - yes. Unfortunately he tries to do 2+ things in the same activity category: such watch tv while listening to music, etc. Intry to help guide him to an activity that involves different skills than his primary task. Sometimes it works.

I agree! Mine always studied in front of the tv. The distraction helped him focus!!

My daughter does her homework while listening to loud music.

It's pretty normal. The music distracts part of his restless mind so he can concentrate on what he is doing.

I recently came across this article about the benefits of specific classical music for ADHD to focus. I’m thinking of trying it with my son.

additudemag.com/study-music...

“Research indicates that music strengthens areas of the brain that, in a child with ADHD, are weak. Music strengthens the auditory, visual/spatial, and motor cortices of the brain. These areas are tied to speech and language skills, reading, reading comprehension, math, problem-solving, brain organization, focus, and attention challenges

But not any music will do. Only certain classical music builds a bigger, better brain. Listening to jazz or pop doesn’t have the same beneficial effects. A study conducted by Donald Shetler, Ed.D., of the Eastman School of Music, found that kids who listened to classical music for 20 minutes a day had improved speech and language skills, a stronger memory, and greater organization of the brain.”

Our son is so talented when it comes to music, he can read print music which is so amazing! But also he has played the violin, flute, and now the ukallee. His teacher wants him. In the guitar band.

One of my boys uses listening to music during homework time to block out other distractions. I also have ADHD inattentive type and for me I can't just sit and watch tv. I have to be doing something. It's a part of that restlessness. I have to be working on editing pictures, or journaling, or editing a manuscript. It's a drive within me that has me wanting to do something productive. It curbs the restless feeling inside.

Definitely not alone. Our son tries to always be doing multiple things at once. He just isn’t always successful. So he just recently started to recognize that if he has to complete the one thing (let’s say homework) he has to stop the other temporarily so he can finish and resume whatever else he wants to do. He fidgets a lot though. He has ticks and does all sorts of things to occupy his hands. Oral sensory things also.
