Appetite Boost

Hello parents,

I would like to get you advice regarding any type of appetite boosters. My 10 year old son is on medication and they are affecting his appetite. I’m trying to balance his diet as best as I can. We just had a follow up appointment and doctor recommended Boost Pudding and gave me RX for it. I found out supplements are not covered by insurance. Anyway I could not find this Boost Pudding at any stores.

We tried protein drinks but he doesn’t like the taste. Any suggestions?

Thank you

I hear kids really like the taste of pediasure. Our psychiatrist just said let him eat when he starts getting hungry which is usually around 2 pm right now. I try to pack a lot of snacks so he has something to munch on when the hungries kick in. It’s just one of the side effects we unfortunately have to deal with. It’s difficult because we worry about them. I also try to pack some of his favorite food, like spaghetti, in his lunch. He doesn’t eat it all, but he does pretty well. We’re about to change meds again so we will probably be back to not eating...

This may or may not be for you...but our psychiatrist had us try ciproheptadine (sp?). It is an old allergy medicine which had the side effect of increasing appetite and possibly drowsiness. It has helped some, and is fairly mild, although I still dislike giving any more medicine than necessary.

My 13 year-old grandson has always been on the thin side. He usually eats a giant breakfast and well at dinner. We don't worry too much about lunch.

Focalin would really cut his appetite which he was on for years. He is now on intuniv and Wellbutrin and doing well on them. He is now taller than me. His pediatrician said as long as he maintained weight and not losing weight not to worry too much about it.
