Adhd and schooling

I am the parent of an amazing 7 yr old girl. She has difficulty in school with impulsivity and her behavior. I do a lot of research, watch her diet, counseling, and she has an iep. With that said the school is sick of her. She gets put out of class at least 3 days a week. She throws tantrums, she ignores requests, and she talks back. They are now moving her to an EBD unit and I'm having a hard time dealing with the rejection of my child. I'm tired.

My daughter is 7 also. I am going through what you are going through. It's emotionally draining. I had to see a therapist myself when all of this came to the surface last year. I am so tired of the school calling me to come get my daughter. I get called anwhere from 1-3 times weekly.

I can rememember being there. One of the most important things is to make sure the school is implementing her IEP correctly. Lots of times school do not and parents aren’t aware of their rights. If this school is unable to provide her the support that she needs based on her IEP you can request an alternative learning environment of your choice and the school district will have to pay for it. Find a school that you are comfortable with!

My daughter is 7 also. She was just diagnosed in January. Honor roll student but her behaviors. She is on a 504 plan which I believe teacher is not implementing. We dont get phone calls, we get text, which is annoying and causes me anxiety. She isnt on medication but we have changed her diet and she's on a vitamin regime. And she see a therapist. And as all others have said, this is very emotionally draining. I know she cant control it but trying to help her is hard. As far as the 504 and IEP, parents please read your rights. I know its a lot of research but Im learning to be the best advocate for my child.

What kinda diet is recommended for these types of issues because my daughter is seriously in the exact same boat

I thought I responded but eliminating sugar is key. I try not to go over 11grams. Lots of fruits and vegetables. Walnuts have been shown to reduce symptoms. My daughter is picky so its a challenge but I can see some changes

Wow I didn’t realize the simplest foods could make such a difference

Yes mam. I started making my daughter's lunch because all they were giving was junk for the ex. Powdered donuts for breakfast. My daughter has anxiety too so the most problematic point of the day is the morning. I read the labels on everything. Anything that ends in "ose" is a sugar

Sorry so late. Cutting out red meat, making sure that there's no red dye in anything she eats. Trying to give her more veggies which she hates.

Yeah I try all those things I have seen the changes. She also has an iron deficiency so I try to limit the red meat.

I’m in the same boat ex pet my sons school won’t put him on an iep smh he takes adderall for his adhd and the school has known of his problems since he started kindergarten their last year!! They aren’t helping him, and I get blamed.. his teacher decided to call CPS on me because of his behavior in school, so now I have to deal with someone in my home because the school can’t do their damn job and grant me the request of having him on an iep! How did you guys get your kids on an iep in your schools cause I’m givin the run around

Your school legally has to at least give you a 504 plan if he is diagnosed with adhd they can not denie you atleast a 504 plan put any request for a 504 plan or iep in writing if they try and denied it tell them you are going to the school district or going to report them that what I was told to do if they tried to denie my daughter

Wow all of these comments sound exactly like my life right now. Today she was definitely diagnosed to have ADHD and was also suspended from school for a day. It’s getting to be extremely ridiculous because I have to go to the school a couple days per week because the principal doesn’t seem like she could careless about the situation. The prescribed her Adderall but I’m just so nervous because I really really want it to work

neacyd in reply to CaringDadof3

Sometimes you go through a few to see what works which also frustrating. One med she was on had her hallucinating and it breaks my heart becAuse you don't want your kid being the guinea pig

Awl that’s sad. I hope you find a medicine that will work for her. Her pediatrician just told us that we have to try doubling her dose for now to see if it works and if not then I guess it’s trying something else

I’m sorry to hear that! Have you tried changing the way you discipline her? I had to change my way and still sometimes is so hard but I use lots of time outs!

CaringDadof3 profile image
CaringDadof3 in reply to Klau07

Yeah we are constantly learning new things to help with the discipline part. She has an appointment today to try and get her on different medicines or at least give her a higher dose of the Adderall

I also have my daughter in counseling I notice that when I praise her on the positive I get more of those good behaviors.

Yes I totally agree with doing that

"If it were working.. It would be working"... Clearly the medicine and or the IEP are not working, it would be nice to have someone at the school who is helpful and come up with some other ways to help you.
