Does anyone know what the treatment is for a second DVT when you’re already taking blood thinners?
I had a DVT last year followed by a bilateral PE and because they were unprovoked I’ve been told that I’ll be on warfarin for life. I’m now being investigated for a second DVT but am wondering what the treatment would be for it, given that I’m already on blood thinners.

I think the incidence of subsequent DVTs is extremely low so if you are found to have developed a new dvt, it will probably trigger a whole hosts of tests and assessments to find out why. You will probably have tests to make sure there isn’t any underlying condition causing the clots and the haematologist will probably check that Warfarin is keeping your clotting stable. It might be that your clotting is not being very well controlled on that particular medication so you might be moved to another. They will probably tell you about the things you can do yourself to help, like making sure that you keep well hydrated by drinking plenty, having your INR checked regularly if you stay on Warfarin, keeping active and losing weight if you need to. They might advise you on steps to take if you make a long haul journey in the future.Sometimes the site of an old DVT can hurt and sometimes the medication makes our legs ache in a similar way to the old clot, so hopefully you will find that the anti coagulants are still doing their job.
I think that you have to be very very unlucky to get a clot on anticoagulants.

Sorry you have had another clot.
My son has had several clots, with no apparent reason and is on thinners for life now, so it can happen. I agree with SpeedyH, you should have a barrage of tests to make sure there is no underlying condition that can be treated to stop this happening.
What they have done for my son is upped his INR range.
Good luck and (easy for me to say) try not to worry too much and ask your drs or haematologist (or receptionist for more advice where to look).

I've had 4 separate dvts every time I was put on tinzarprin injections and warfarin. The last DVT I had I was put on xraltero rivoxaban for life .
I do still worry incase I get another DVT as this medication doesn't stop further DVTs .
I have factor 5 Leiden blood clotting abnormality.

I take rivoxaban for life now iv had three DVTs after a second DVT it recommends blood thinners for life I'm paranoid as I still get pain and some discomfort and sometimes think is it another DVT.
I was at the GP on Wednesday he assured me I wouldn't get another blood clot whilst on rivoxoban I said to him I'm sorry but other medical professionals have all told me that just because you on blood thinners doesn't mean you won't get another DVT it just lessens the risk it's not full prevention, but the GP was adamant so what do you do 🤷!
So now he said it's sciatica .
Without a scan it's worrying that he can diagnose me .
I'm looking into a private MRI scan as I've been in pain with my back and can't seem to get rid of it.
My leg has been throbbing for ages now.

Hi. I had a DVT whilst being on Dabigatron for a few years, although I was on Warfarin before that. When the clot behind my knee was discovered after months of trying to persuade the GP to refer me for a Doppler scan as I “couldn’t have a clot on anticoagulants”, another GP changed me onto Apixaban - so far, so good three years on. Touch wood!
I’m on Apixaban but would really prefer to be on Warfarin I do get a few side effects with the new tablets. I itch everywhere which is supposed to be a side effect!! Strange I know.

I’m on Apaxaban much better than warfarin. Warfarin almost killed me. I haemorrhaged in my groin. Crushed the nerve bundle to my left leg. I have bilateral multifocal emboli (COPD)
I tend to think of things in a more simplified term. It’s not going to magically go away. We have to learn to live with the limitations.
All the medication can do is stop the blood clots going further. It will not remove them. Thinking the blood might help. But I’ve personally founds it did more damage.
I’ve been wearing thrombosis stockings for 24 years. Most of the time it was just the leg with damaged nerves. But about four years ago, I noticed a change, my good leg developed DNTs I immediately started using a thrombosis stocking on it. Sadly that DVT, broke loose and went through my heart to both lungs. That is when the professor started me on Apaxaban. He told me, I will most likely need to take it for the rest of my life. About a year later the local doctor said I should be off them. But within days, I started coughing again, struggling with breathing. So I’m back on them. Now for four years
I am on thinners for life, I had a minor dvt behind my knee, was on warfarin for 6 months, was due to come off but the dr decided to run more tests, discovered I have factor 5 hertz and low grade aps. The problem was warfarin gave me bad side effects and dagbitran did not work so I amOn sinthrome (acenocoumerol) similar to warfarin but I have zero side effects
If you have reclotted on one of the newer agents and you’ve not missed any, then in the UK you would be switched to warfarin with a higher target of 3 .0. This is because the trials were against warfarin with a 2.5 target.

Hi,, I was taking plavix after having my first DVT and plavix was not strong enough,, I had 6 more blood clots with stunting before the put me on Elaquis,, and I go back to have my arteries checked every 6 weeks and it seems to be working ,, it’s been a year and a half and I haven’t had any problems,, in fact I was there yesterday,, all clear,, and the dr asked me if I wanted to stop elaquis,, I said are you outta your mind,, that’s only asking for trouble,, so I will continue to take it,, I didn’t have any side effects from any of the blood thinners,, thank god,
