Anaemia

I’m on Edoxaban and have now had a blood test which shows anaemia. Has this happened to anyone else?

I also have foot and leg pain but that’s another story!

Hi, I am now on Edoxiban but used to be on Warfarin and at that time I was given an iron infusion via drip for Anaemia. Since then I have been fine. I don't think the Edoxiban is the cause, but best to mention it to you GP or Consultant.

Hi I am taking Dabigatran which is similar to Edoxaban and it makes me anaemic. So far I have had two separate courses of Folic acid to address this. It also depletes my vitamin D and I am prescribed this ongoing. NICE guidelines say that people on the newer anticoagulants should have blood tests every 6 months to monitor kidney and liver function, so my GP does blood counts etc at the same time. Hope this helps.

Has the folic acid course cured the anaemia?

DI’d you have any side effects of the anaemia? I have shortness of breath and dizziness.

Thank you for replying

Yes, it does. But it has recurred hence keeping a regular eye on it. Symptoms for me were a lightheaded sort of dizziness, exhaustion, difficulty remembering things (more than usual!), shortness of breath definitely and itchy skin. Not sure which were due to the folic acid deficiency or the vitamin d deficiency. Taking an over the counter supplement doesn’t seem to be enough for me. x

It’s difficult to really know the reasons for certain symptoms isn’t it?

Yes I had anemia on xarelto but I had a course of iron tablets and then was fine.

I’m glad to hear that. So you didn’t change your coagulation ?

Yes the newer anticoagulants cause anaemia and leg pain and cramping and many other horrible side effects including muscle weakness, insomnia, stomach problems and more.

Thank you for replying. My cardiologist is convinced that the leg pain and numbness isn’t the anticoagulant. I disagreed and was thinking of changing to warfarin. What do you feel about that change?

And has your anaemia improved ? Have you had treatment for it?

Doctors don’t seem to want to believe patients but I think we know our bodies best. Anaemia I think will need ongoing treatment. Had serious bleed beginning of year and needed iron tablets but it appears I need more tablets now. Think it’s something you have to have checked if you feel weak and tired.

Do you have any other symptoms of anaemia? I get very breathless

Yes weakness, tiredness, not able to walk far. Have only ever been on newer anticoagulants so don’t know about warfarin. Don’t think you would have so many side effects but I believe it may have higher risk of bleeding.
