Dry tickly throat after pulmonary embolism

Pulmonary embolism 4 weeks ago , multiple bilateral PE ,on rivaroxaban . Since PE have had very dry tickly throat and cough. Throat now sore and raspy is this a normal side effect of PE or the medication?

I don’t think so. Sounds like you have picked up a virus on top of your other health problems. Drink plenty, take paracetamol and get plenty of rest and see your gp if it doesn’t improve. Sometimes when people get chest and lung conditions they adopt an unhealthy breathing pattern due to trying to prevent the pain etc. It is a good idea to check that you are not mouth breathing (which can cause a thickly throat and cough) and that you are breathing slowly and down into your belly. Hope you feel better soon.

Thank you SpeedyH advice much appreciated , I think it's probably a cold virus on top of everything else !!!

A dry, tickly cough is a symptom of a PE; it should clear as your clots do.

I still had a mild cough about a month after I was diagnosed and it went away over time as the clots dissolved.

Thank you catgirl1976 I thought it might be due to clots, I think it's compounded due to a cold on top!!!

Thank you mrsredboots , the tickly cough coincided with PE so I thought it must be connected, plus I have caught a cold as well which has irritated it more . Perils of being a Grandma!!

Oh TELL me about it! First year each of my grandsons was at nursery they caught everything going and passed it on to me! Now, finally, they are in years 5 and 1, and I haven't had a cold for ages! Just as well, actually and seriously, as everything goes straight to my chest since my PEs just over 2 years ago. .

I saw the anti coagulation nurse today who said I should get a flu vaccination this year , which I have booked at GPs. Never had one before , wondering if there is any additional concerns if on rivaroxban?

No - much better to have the jab. I hadn't had one for many, many years, but I happened to be visiting my GP last autumn on another matter and merely said the words "flu jab", and she rushed out and grabbed one and administered it immediately! Slightly to my horror - the injection itself didn't hurt, but it hurt afterwards for a bit. Oh well....

No I had the flu jab last year on xarelto and had no problems and I am having one in boots this Saturday coming. They're nothing to worry about.

Thank you that is reassuring , someone mentioned a pneumonia vaccination but I'm not aware of that at my local GP surgery.

I had the pneumonia vaccine last year as well and once that's done you don't need another one for a long long time.

I am interested that Boots gave you the flu jab if they knew you were on anticoagulants. I tried to have a jab at the local chemist, and he flatly refused to administer it when he knew that I was on Apixaban. I have never found excessive bleeding to be a problem with the latter, even when being cut. Fear of being sued, possibly?

I said I was on anticoagulants and she said she would give the jab under the skin rather than into a muscle like with the heparin injections

Interesting. I have no problem usually, attending the GP mass clinic, but I will ask about that for the odd occasion when I can’t attend because of travel arrangements . Thanks.

By the way you do know that if by any remote chance you should start coughing up blood - unlikely, but it could happen - you must go straight to A&E at once.
