Hi everyone,

New here on this forum. Have been on warfarin since 1997 n has gotten used to the tweaking n adjustments of warfarin. I've had two episodes of dvt/pe in 1997 n 2004. Docs told me I 've to be on warfarin for life. Apart from this in 2012 had an episode of vasculitis/Wegener n for that I was given imuran( azathioprine), everything was fine when my gastroenterologist decided to up my imuran from 100mg to 150mg, it's been almost two weeks n my inr won't budge from 1.9, a value too low for me. I'm taking 10mg of warfarin but nothing. Please friends HELP! Suggestions needed. My weight is 80kg n past two weeks had been in lot of stress. Don't exercise much. Food intake is calculated but tend to 've cheat meals in form of kfc n pizza now n then. What to do? How can I up my inr before I leave for vacations.

Hello,

Hope you're fine

It is very important that your doctor check your progress at regular visits to see if the medicine is working properly. Blood tests, such as an INR, are needed to check for proper dosage and unwanted side effects. Be sure to keep all appointments.

Hello Masuma, the 2nd time I was on warfarin was from 2002 until 2014... In 2014 I suffered what they thought was a mini stroke. For three months or so before the mayhem my inr was lower than usual... It would not stabilise... Eventually in early 2017 with having gone through a whole world of different tests I was diagnosed with Hughes syndrome... I thank my lucky stars as the toss up was between multiple sclerosis or Hughes... I think I got off slightly lighter with my diagnosis...

There are so many things out there that influence our inr. It may be that your body has gotten used to warfarin and you need to change your anticoagulant. I was taken off warfarin after the suspected mini stroke and on that same day I was put on rivaroxaban. You seriously need to speak to your consultant before things get bad... A lower than expected inr can prove in worst circumstances fatal. Please contact him/her. You need to get your inr sorted before your vacation etc.

I wish you the best of health for both now and the future. I don't want to make you seriously worried or sound pessimistic... But you need to get this sorted out. Take care of yourself because it is necessary.

It's been 4 years since I suffered an unprovoked PE and I've been told I will be on warfarin for life, which puzzles me as my understanding was it wasn't a big clot. I am sometimes on 5 of warfarin 5 days a week, 4 the other 2 days and have INR Checks monthly, sometimes weekly or fortnightly, depending on readings. I should be around 2.5 but the last 5 weeks, been 3.4/ 3.1. I'm still finding my way round my diet compatability with my warfarin.
