Warafin long term

Hi everyone, I am new here and basically to chat rooms in general.

Because of blood clots in the lungs, I have been on warafin since 1986. It has worked well for me, so I have not considered changing to anything else.. I tend to operate on the "If it is not broke, don't fix it, you may not like the results". What I am curios about is loss of hair a possible side effect of taking warafin long term? Yes, I am getting older (56), but I should not be loosing hair this quick. However, hair is just hair. I am on a host of other medications (15 +), so it could very well be the combinations also. Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.

I have been on warfarin due to a pe in July 2007 and another in August 2007 and we have a family history of clots all 4 of my mother's father and his 3 other brothers all died from clots so now been deemed hereditary and some other members have been tested they can't rest me as I am not stable enough to come off of medication for a month but my doctors are trying to force me onto the new drugs but I did research and they do not cover higher targets to normal so I said if they show me the proof I will go onto them but gpmade me laugh and said they are expensive and most people are going back to warfarin because they don't get on with them so I agree don't change something that isn't broken I won't go onto them and not be safe ss

I hope you don't mind me asking if you have been tested for antiphospholipid syndrome. I have it. It causes blood clots and can sometimes run in families. There are three blood tests and you can get tested on two of them despite being on anticoagulation.

Hi, and welcome. Sorry I can't help about the hair loss - as you've been taking warfarin for such a long time it probably isn't related. Worth enquiring next time you see a doctor.

Thanks, I'm thinking that it must be something new that I am taking however I didn't really notice when I started loosing hair until it was significantly thinner. I'm due for my 3 month check up in Nov, so I will ask him again. Unfortunately I won't be able to regain any hair that has been lost, but would like to try & keep what I do have left. Of course, obviously, I am thankful I still have hair and alive and doing well as expected.

True, I'm beginning to think it possibly is a combination of medicines I am taking. Yes, I do plan to ask my primary dr about this again in my 3 month check up in Nov.

I am also 56 and new to this site. I have also had blood clots in my lungs due to taking estrogen for too long. I am actually freaking out about the hair loss. I have always had long, thick hair and it is so fine now, I am worried I will soon be bald. Have an appointment with my doc next week to discuss issue with him. Hopefully he has some answers.

I've been on warfarin for about 14 years. I always had thick hair. I did thin out a little on top but the sides are still thick. So I think it was aging hair loss as I'm 64 now. But possibly your hair loss could be due to warfarin and aging combined???

Also I have lupus and APS so hair loss can be related to those.

Did they find a reason for your blood clots? Do you have an underlying condition which may also give hair loss? And of course as you say other medication might be involved. One of my friends lost a lot of hair and thought that hydroxychloroquine was responsible.
