Post PE pains

I'm a relatively fit 46-year-old male who had a straddled submassive PE in April, with no known cause. Thankfully the medical team used catheter-directed thrombolysis to dissolve the clots almost completely over a 24 hour period.

Since leaving the hospital, I've had a tightness in my throat and a slight pain in my right lung. Nothing debilitating, just discomfort. However, it's gotten slightly worse over the past few days. I've been to my consultant and had a chest x-ray, which was fine. I've been told to take paracetamol and wait for the problem to pass, which isn't what I was hoping to hear!

If anyone has had a similar experience, I'd love to hear your story and what you discovered.

Have they investigated why you had the PE, have they diagnosed anything?

They carried out a pelvic to brain CT before administering the Thrombolysis and found nothing. So far they can't find any reason for the PE.

Yes, I'm on Eliquis (Apixaban) 5mg, twice daily.

I think Wittycjt was talking about any blood clotting problems such as Antiphospholipid syndrome (sticky blood, Hughes syndrome) all the same. might be worth taking a look at the hughes foundation web site or on healthunlocked sticky blood, I don't know about your anticoagulant there are some fairly new ones

Hope you feel better soon

I see. I'm due to see my coagulation doctor in June to check on possible blood issues and to assess the need for ongoing medication. I have looked at the Hughes Foundation website and have read up on the subject. Hopefully, all will be revealed then. My main concern is the discomfort I'm feeling in my throat and right lung.

Hope you're feeling better too!

Have you asked yr gp for advice? Think I'd do that before the weekend .....just wondering if it might be more like intercostal muscle pain after all the stress you have been under ? (Not surprisingly we breathe differently when stressed and this has been a cause of my thoracic pain in the past) but do ask a professional ☺

I spoke with my respiratory consultant on Wednesday. I proposed the same as you have suggested, unfortunately, She offered no theory or further exploration. We pushed for a chest x-ray, which showed nothing.

I had similar issue many years ago whilst diving with a cold. Coughing under pressure caused the respiratory tract to strain and contract. Resulting in what I remember to be the same symptoms as I'm currently experiencing.

moo196 Interesting you would say that. I've had really awful rib, intercostal and thoracic isssues in the past 2 years. Been on Eliquis for a year and half, Xarelto prior to.

Not much you can do for intercostal muscle pain - if that's what it is, Can't rest those muscles ( well- wouldn't be advisable :-) ). If no other medical diagnosis then maybe that's what it is - try a few days of rest and yogic breathing without straining.
