Armchair exercises?

I am convalescing from pleurisy and pneumonia and wiped out by the slightest exertion. I am also putting on weight although keeping to Lowest NHS-recommended calorie intake. Wondered if armchair exercises would help?

Oh it's tricky isn't it? Make sure your intake is including the protein, vitamins and minerals you need to support your recovery.

I doubt that armchair exercise would help with weight loss if you're still not well enough to be walking but it might well help maintain some flexibility and strength.

It can take quite a while to get over a nasty bug like that... arguably you'd be better with focussing on taking a little stroll if you can and getting a bit of the health giving properties of being outdoors. Even sitting on a bench or lolling on a sun lounger for a brief period at least.

No fat (but I do eat olive oil and butter). As much fresh fruit and veg as I can manage. No added sugars. Meat, fish, vegetable protein. Potatoes, wholemeal bread, oats, rice.

Have read the article and will try the mudras. Thank you so much for the suggestion and the good wishes. Lizzie

Hi LizzieG101, so sorry to hear about your illness - it's so debilitating and frustrating when you can't do what you want to! Rfc's mantra of "slow and steady" I think is the best one to follow when you're building strength and fitness after illness. If you can possibly manage it, even 10 steps is an achievement! I wish you well in your recovery - I'll watch out for your posts and cheer on your progress!:)

Hello LizzieG101, sorry to hear about your illness. Yes, it must be frustrating knowing you are unable to exercise and so are putting on weight. Try not to worry about the weight. It will come down once you are up and about. In the meanwhile, it is important for you to regain a sense of well being. I'd suggest you just do steady breathing - in, out, in, out for 10-15 minutes (at least) twice a day - not on a full stomach!

Start with in-out, count 1, then do the next in-out, count 2, and so on upto 10. Then go back to 1. Do not hold your breath. You can do this lying down or sitting up. You could keep your eyes either closed or opened during this while. Have a good day and...chin up!

I'll try it. Thank you. Is this to calm anxiety or stimulate immunity?

Hi LizzieG101, the breathing practice is to regulate and strengthen the breath. It is believed that when the breath stabilises, many ailments are cured.
