Thinking about this year and why I love this forum.

If your looking at this forum wondering if it is for you then let me share a bit about me an why it is good to have support.

I was a runner, swimmer and walker, but this year it all changed. I donated a kidney to my husband and part of the process is that they cut through my stomach muscles. This left me for a while finding it difficult walking confidently.

I came home from the hospital a little scared and vulnerable. My first walk outside was scary but I was lucky as I had support on here. This forum is all about getting you out the door. All the admins on here have been in that vulnerable position that some of you are in, we understand that sometimes that first step out the door is the hardest and we are committed to helping you take your first steps.

We have been there and we really do understand, we will hold your hands through your journey because we really do not want any one to go through it on their own.

Happy healthy walking New Year to you all.

Rfc x.

You did an amazing thing for your husband, hopefully you will now be regaining health and fitness together.

I use to ice skate and hike, gave up the skating when I was 50 due to arthritic feet, your full body weight on an edge of a thin blade is a killer for foot joints! Up till July 2017 was still enjoying hiking could do about 5 miles without having sore feet the next day but developed a bad back and now im limited to short walks with my dog.

I had been thinking, really what is the point of me walking for health as I can't currently build up speed or distance? and my exercising needs to concentrate on what the physio has set for me, and my Pilates both of which strengthen muscles without triggering pain. But then I realised health isn't just physical health, theres mental health (stress reduction) and spiritual health ( enjoying nature) so it's about adjusting my expectations of what walking means to me rather than being frustrated from setting physical goals I can't achieve.

Happy walking everyone whatever your level of ability walking has so many different things to offer.

Oh Fran, you are so right! Getting out of the door does much more than make our physical body better - even a short meander helps lift depression and lowers our stress levels. And the point you make about setting realistic goals for yourself is important - and so very hard when health issues force you to change your lifestyle. You seem to have come to terms with your situation and you are an inspiration to those of us still struggling to do so. Thank you for sharing your story. I wish you all the very best for 2018.

Thank you kay50 im not sure I've fully come to terms with it and I'm still hoping I may improve a little, but I've spent the last few months being frustrated and fed up and gaining weight and I have had enough of that, I know I'll feel better if I adjust my expectations. Happy new year ๐Ÿ˜€

wow, what a total hero you are!! I hope you (and your hubby) are doing well and have had a great Christmas season.

I have been doing a gym class called Sh'bam which is very similar to the Fitness Marshalls vids. Might be worth you looking into if you fancy a class type activity.

Happy New Year !! :)

Scared, why? You seem motivated and are already walking a bit with your dog.
