hi im 58 5ft and weigh in at 13 stone broke my wrist been off work for 7 weeks put on a stone got at least 6 more weeks of work. help need to loose weight . be fore i self destruct xx

Hi there @bipper one of our administrators will be along too shortly with all of the info about the site but do make sure you look at the bmi calculator on the NHS site to see how many calories you should have every day. When I first joined I was having less than I should as I thought this would help more and wasn't losing weight but then I was told by someone to make sure I was eating enough as your body thinks you are starving it instead and turns what you do eat into body fat to ensure it can continue. I upped my calories to the correct amount and have now lost 1st12lbs. Good luck with your journey. People are really friendly on here.

This is what has worked for me.

Move more, Eat less

When I started on my weight loss journey in January I was teetering on the obese edge of the BMI scale and seriously unfit. I tried running 50 yards for a bus and thought I was going to have a cardiac arrest. I am nearly 65, 5' 5" and was 12stone 8 lbs on January 1st.

I take it that there is nothing wrong with your legs? Start walking serious amounts - if you are off work for another 6 weeks you can do this. Start with what you feel comfortable with and gradually build up speed, gradients and duration. Consider getting a pedometer - I use a Fitbit which monitors my heart rate and steps which I have found very motivating.

I am now 38 lbs lighter, in the healthy BMI zone and today I went out for a 3 hour walk/jog and covered 10 miles, 23000 steps, 110 floors and was able to get some serious cardiovascular exercise.

I have also been counting my calories but eating healthily and enough to rarely feel hungry. It is really important to eat enough when trying to lose weight. There is some very good advice on this site and lots of people start with the NHS 12 week plan. I try, as do many others not to think of myself as being on a diet but more of having a lifestyle change. 'Diets' as such rarely work and most people put the weight lost back on with interest - the yoyo effect! For me it has been important to lay off the alcohol which has not been easy.

I also read, absorbed and have generally followed the advice written in a book called Overcoming Weight Problems written by a clinical psychologist and dietician.

I wish you success but not luck because luck has nothing to do with it, nor does will power - the key is motivation.
